Medlin, Purcell and Two Relay Squads Earn VaSID All-State Honors

RICHMOND, Va. – The Virginia Sports Information Directors have announced their 2020-21 All-State awards for swimming and diving Thursday morning. Richmond had two individuals earn second team all-state honors, with two relays also picking up second team all-state honors.
Lauren Medlin (Cary, N.C.) earned first team honors as a sprint freestyler. Medlin won the 100 freestyle and set a school record with her 49.61 time at the Atlantic 10 championships. She also took third in the 50 freestyle with a time of 23.17 and placed fourth in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:49.96, all at the Atlantic 10 Championship.
Maggie Purcell (Southampton, N.Y.) earned all-state honors in the individual medley category. At the Atlantic 10 Championship, Purcell took first in the 200 IM with a time of 2:00.17, and was third in the 400 IM at 4:18.14.
Two of the Spider relay teams also earned second team all-state honors. The 800 freestyle team that took second at the Atlantic 10 Championship of Alexa Connors (Kingston, Mass.), Purcell, Medlin and Megan Carson (Apex, N.C.) with a time of 7:19.84 earned all-state honors. The school record breaking 400 freestyle relay team of Medlin, Purcell, Katelyn Pennell (Eden Prairie, Minn.) and Claire O'Shaughnessy (Laurel, Md.) took first in the meet with a time of 3:21.03 to round out the Spiders all-state awards.
