Four Men’s Tennis Student-Athletes Named A-10 All-Conference

RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond men's tennis team earned multiple Atlantic 10 All-Conference honors as graduate student Matt Fernandez (Richmond, Va.), freshman Daniel Kliebhan (Newtown, Pa.), Alex Wernink (Glen Cove, N.Y.) and junior John Walsh (Bryn Mawr, Pa.) were announced by the league office on Tuesday.
Fernandez earned his second-straight A-10 All-Conference First Team honor after going 6-11 in singles this past season. Fernandez played 16 of his 17 matches at No. 1 singles after returning for his graduate season. He earned wins against A-10 foes from Duquesne and Saint Joseph's. In doubles, he partnered with Josh Keitelman (1-2) and Alex Wernink (5-7). At the A-10 Championship, Fernandez and Wernink earned a doubles win against Fordham.
Kliebhan picked up his first A-10 All-Conference award after going 7-8 in singles. Kliebhan was 6-8 at No. 2 singles and 1-0 at No. 1 singles to land on the A-10 First Team. He went 2-1 against A-10 opponents with wins against George Mason and Saint Joseph's. Kliebhan won his last three singles matches and went unfinished in the A-10 Championship final forcing a third set against VCU's Charles Bertimon. In doubles, Kliebhan tied for first with a team-best nine doubles wins, including eight with Josh Keitelman at No. 1 doubles. The duo went 2-1 at No. 1 doubles at the A-10 Championship clinching doubles points against Fordham (7-6, 12-10) and Dayton (7-6, 7-5).
Walsh was named A-10 All-Conference Second Team after going 10-6 in singles to lead the team. Walsh was 4-2 at No. 3 singles and 6-4 at No. 4 singles. He went 2-1 at the A-10 Championship in singles with wins against Fordham and a match-clinching win against Dayton at No. 4 singles to send the Spiders to the A-10 final. Walsh won four of his last five matches in singles to finish the season. In doubles, he paired with Alex Wernink (1-0), Campbell Erwin (6-6) and Alaister Burke (0-1). With Erwin in doubles, they finished 4-6 at No. 2 doubles and 2-0 at No. 3 doubles.
Wernink earned two A-10 All-Conference honors being named to the All-Academic Team and Second Team All-Conference. He finished 8-7 in singles, including a 3-1 record against A-10 opponents. Wernink was 1-0 at No. 2 singles, 4-5 at No. 3 singles and 3-2 at No. 4 singles. He won five singles matches in a row from March 14-April 1. At the A-10 Championship, two of his three matches went unfinished against Fordham and Dayton. In doubles, he partnered with John Walsh (1-0), Matt Fernandez (5-7) and Alaister Burke (0-2). He finished 4-5 at No. 3 doubles with Fernandez and was one of 104 Richmond student-athletes to be named a Scholar Athlete (3.50 GPA or higher).
The Spiders finished 2021 with an 8-9 overall record, including a 5-3 record at the Westhamption Tennis Courts. Richmond made a run to the A-10 Championship final for the second-straight season but lost to crosstown rival VCU, 4-0. The Spiders will return five of their top six players for the 2022 season.
