SPARKS, Md. – University of Richmond sophomore Sophia DiCenso is set to tryout for USA Lacrosse 2021 Women's National Team on June 9-11 at the USA Lacrosse headquarters in Sparks, Md. The tryouts were originally scheduled for December 2020.
"It is such an honor to be able to attend this tryout," DiCenso said. "I am excited to compete at the national level among so many great players.
"My coaches and teammates at Richmond have pushed me to the best I can be and they are the reason I have this opportunity. I am truly grateful for this opportunity."
DiCenso is one of 23 midfielders to garner an invitation and one of 63 of the nation's top players to make the tryout. In the 2021 season for the nationally-ranked Spiders, DiCenso tallied nine points on seven goals and two assists in nine games. The Foxboro, Mass. native also finished third on the team with 19 draw controls, nine ground balls and four caused turnovers. She had a hat trick in Richmond's 19-13 win at VCU (April 16).
She made an immediate impact as a freshman in the shortened spring 2020 season, collecting 16 draw controls, 13 ground balls, scoring seven goals and tallied two assists to help the Spiders to a 7-0 record.
Before starting into her collegiate career, DiCenso won gold as a member of the US Lacrosse Women's U19 Team at the 2019 World Lacrosse Championship. DiCenso proved to be a dominant force in the midfield, tallying seven goals and an assist through the tournament. She capped off an impressive performance with five draw controls, four ground balls and a pair of caused turnovers.
"We are very proud of Sophia and excited for her to have this incredible opportunity," Richmond head women's lacrosse coach Allison Kwolek said. "She approaches everything with a championship mentality and is a true competitor, giving her max effort every single moment on the field. We will all be cheering her on in June."
