De Marte and Mulberg Head to Tokyo for Olympic Games

RICHMOND, Va. – Former Spider baseball student-athlete Jonathan de Marte and current assistant coach Nate Mulberg are on their way to Tokyo to represent Team Israel in the baseball competition beginning next week. After a tune up tour around the northeast last week, the two will head Tokyo for the first game against Korea Thursday, July 29 at 6 a.m. Eastern time.
During the European/African qualifier in 2019, de Marte served as a quality reliever late in games for Team Israel. He appeared in two games, throwing a scoreless ninth inning to secure the win over the Netherlands and got the ball the following day. He threw 3.0 shutout innings, striking out six to help put Team Israel in the driver seat of the European/African qualifier in Italy.
De Marte competed with Richmond for six years, earning two redshirt seasons, In his final season, he was named a team captain. During that final season, he led the Spiders with five home runs and a 2.67 ERA and four saves in 17 appearances.
Mulberg serves in several capacities for the Israeli team, most notably acting as the first base coach. He also works with individually with the position players, assisting with in-game instruction and game management strategies.
