RICHMOND, Va. – The College Swimming & Diving Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) named 789 swimmers and divers to its Scholar All-American Team for the 2020-21 season. Rising junior Sara Greene (Tega Cay, S.C.) and rising senior Maggie Purcell (Southampton, N.Y.) earned honorable mention status for the Richmond program. These two Spiders were two of five competitors from the Atlantic 10 Conference to earn the award, joining a duo from Duquesne and a lone competitor from Davidson.
Greene, a mathematics major, earned a medal in the 100-breaststroke, while helping the Spiders earn points as part of the 200 medley relay and the 400 medley relay at the Atlantic 10 Championship. She also took fifth in the 200 breaststroke and competed in the 100-butterfly to help the Spiders win the Atlantic 10 Championship.
At the Atlantic 10 Championship meet, Purcell, a finance major, took first in the 200 IM and the 200-breaststroke. She placed second on the 800 freestyle relay and the 400 medley relay teams. She finished third in the 400 IM before setting the school record and taking gold in the 400-freestyle relay.
To qualify for the First-Team Scholar All-America, student-athletes must have earned a GPA of 3.5 or higher and participated in their national championship. Second-Team selections (also called Honorable Mention) must have also earned a 3.50 GPA or higher and achieved a 'B' time standard for the national championship or participated at a diving zone qualification meet.
