RICHMOND, Va. – Graduate students Brooke Fazio (Basking Ridge, N.J.) and Brittney Wright (Moorestown, N.J.) have been nominated for the NCAA's Woman of the Year award for 2021. Fazio is a highly decorated member of the women's track and field team while Wright is a defensive star for the nationally ranked Spider women's lacrosse program.
Fazio is a three-time USTFCCCA All-American, two for the Indoor 800m (2020, 2021) and recently for the 2021 outdoor season in the 800m, where she finished eighth overall with a time of 2:02.97. The five-time NCAA Championship qualifier (2018-21) holds UR program records in the outdoor 800m (2:02.73), as well as the anchor leg of the indoor and outdoor 4x400 and 4x800 relays and the lead leg in the DMR team records.
A team captain and leadership board member of the women's track and field program, Fazio has also served on Richmond's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee as a member of the Community Outreach Group, and UR's Champion Leader Cohort. Fazio is also a two-time Spider Athletic Fund Athlete of the Year (2020, 2021).
Wright collected 2021 Atlantic 10 Defensive Player of the Year and First Team honors this season after helping the nationally-ranked women's lacrosse program to a 10-2 record, a part of the A-10 regular season title and an A-10 Championship Tournament berth. Wright has also been named to the IWLCA Second Team All-South Region for her standout defensive efforts in 2021. In each of her four seasons, Wright has been an instrumental part of the Spiders' shutdown defense, as her class put together a 50-10 record, won two A-10 Tournament Championships and helped the program etch its name in the national rankings. In 59 career games, the speedy Wright has 58 career ground balls and 36 caused turnovers.
Wright has also been a four-year member of UR's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and will serve on the SAAC Executive Board as the Diversity and Inclusion Co-Chair for the 2021-22 academic year. She is also an active member of the women's lacrosse leadership council and helped spearhead the addition of the social responsibility committee.
One of the most prestigious NCAA awards, the NCAA established the Woman of the Year Award in 1991 to celebrate the achievements of women in intercollegiate athletics. Now in its 31st year, the NCAA Woman of the Year award honors graduating female college athletes who have exhausted their eligibility and distinguished themselves in academics, athletics, service and leadership throughout their collegiate careers.
