Spiders Sweep Atlantic Collegiate Baseball League Postseason Awards
08/13/2021 | Baseball
RICHMOND, Va. – Richmond was well represented in the Atlantic Collegiate Baseball League this summer as the Spiders swept the league's Most Valuable Player and Pitcher of the Year awards. It's the first time in ACBL history that two from the same school swept the league's MVP, and POY awards. Returner Chase Conklin (Mullica Hill, N.J.) was the league's Santy Gallone Most Valuable Player as he led the Trenton Generals to a League Championship. Incoming graduate transfer Winston Allen was the Darrin Winston Pitcher of the Year after a phenomenal summer with the Jersey Pilots.
Conklin, a rising sophomore, led his team to its first ACBL championship since 2014. He closed the regular season by going 19-for-36, owning a .609 on-base percentage and put the ball in play in all of his final 46 plate appearances. Over the final nine games, he drove in 16 runs, made difficult defensive plays look routine and his heads-up base running allowed the Generals to steal some runs during the final stretch of the season.
His performance in the ACBL Championship series solidified an already qualified MVP campaign. Conklin reached base in 10 of 11 plate appearances in the best-of-three series with the North Jersey Eagles. In the championship doubleheader sweep, he drove in seven runs, scored four times, stole two bases, scored on a pop up on the infield and snuffed out a potential Eagles rally.
Allen, a graduate transfer from Delaware, proved to be the staff ace for the Jersey Pilots, earning the Darrin Winston Pitcher of the Year award. Allen dominated his division during the regular season, not allowing an earned run in his first 31 innings of work. He ended the season going 3-0 with a 0.29 ERA giving up just 13 hits on the season. He held opponents to a .124 average against and a .360 OPS. Every inning Allen threw was against three of the top four teams in the ACBL. Twice he started against Conklin's Generals, and three times he got the ball to take on the Quakertown Blazers.
Conklin and Allen are slated to make their way back to campus later this month as fall workouts will begin later this month.
