RICHMOND, Va. -- The Golf Coaches Association of American (GCAA) has announced that six members of the Richmond Spiders men's golf team have been named Srixon/Cleveland Golf All-America Scholars for the 2020-21 season, doubling the program record for most All-America Scholars in a year. 2020-21 seniors Michael Baker and Andrew McInerney, juniors Michael Childress and Carter Cook, and sophomores Lou Baker and Ben Cooper earned the distinction, which is reserved for student-athletes who participated in at least 40 percent of a team's competitive rounds during the season, posted a stroke average under 76.0, maintained a cumulative GPA of 3.2 or higher, and displayed high moral character. Freshmen are not eligible.Â
The Spiders were one of just six teams in Division I to have at least six All-America Scholars in 2020-21. BYU, Cincinnati, and Ohio State each had seven players named All-America Scholars, making them the only three schools with more honorees than Richmond in Division I. Entering 2020-21, the URÂ record for All-America Scholars in a year was three in 2012.Â
Both Michael Baker and Michael Childress earned All-America Scholar status for a second-straight season, becoming the seventh and eighth players in program history to be named an All-America Scholar multiple times. Lou Baker, Carter Cook, Ben Cooper, and Andrew McInerney were named All-America Scholars for the first time in their careers. For Lou Baker, the distinction was only the latest from his 2020-21 season. Earlier this offseason Baker was named A-10 Golfer of the Year, A-10 All-Academic, and First Team All-State for his performance on the course and in the the classroom last year.Â
This is the second-straight week that Richmond has received a major honor from the GCAA. Last week, the Spiders were crowned GCAA Academic National Champions for posting a team GPA of 3.85 during the the 2020-21 season, highest for any men's college golf program across the NCAA, NAIA, and NJCAA.Â
