DURHAM, NC – The University of Richmond field hockey team dropped a tough 1-0 contest to No. 12 Duke University Sunday at Williams Field at Jack Katz Stadium. The Blue Devils move to 1-1 on the season, while the Spiders fall to 0-2.
In a back-and-forth contest, the Spiders defense shined as they were able to break up many of Duke's offensive attempts. Junior goalkeeper Erika Latta (Midlothian, Va.) made five saves, with three in the second quarter.
The Spiders had a scoring opportunity in the second quarter, as junior Lindsey Frank's (Gansevoort, N.Y.) shot off of sophomore Alexandria Lavelle's (Bryn Mawr, Penn.) penalty corner insert was saved by Duke's goalkeeper. Frank led the Spiders with 2-of-3 shots on goal.
Senior Steffie Bongers' (Weert, The Netherlands) got a shot off of junior Sutton Orndorff's (Charlotte, N.C.) penalty corner insert pass, but was stopped again by Duke as the Spiders were unable to corral the rebound for the tip in.
Orndorff, along with sophomore Madi Hyatt (Fredericksburg, Va.) and freshman Stevie Drum (Virginia Beach, Va.) all collected shots in the contest, with Drum's coming on frame.
Duke broke up the scoreless contest at 47:59 in the fourth quarter, taking advantage of a Richmond player-down situation.
Duke out shot Richmond, 13-7, and held the advantage on shots on goal (6-4) and penalty corners (4-2).
Richmond will open its home slate on Sunday, September 5, against James Madison at Crenshaw Field. The 1 p.m. contest will also be aired on ESPN+.
