Spider Field Hockey Falls to No. 24 JMU in Home Opener

RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond field hockey offense was stifled by No. 24 James Madison, falling 3-0, on a sunny Sunday afternoon at Crenshaw Field.
The Spiders fall to 0-3 on the year, while the Dukes improve to 3-1.
JMU took an early 2-0 lead in the first quarter, connecting on a corner play and executing a penalty stroke. The Dukes added a third goal just before halftime.
Richmond earned six penalty corners and seven shots in the first half, but the JMU defense disrupted all of the Spiders scoring opportunities. Junior Lindsey Frank (Gansevoort, N.Y) paced the Spiders with three shots, while senior Steffie Bongers (Weert, The Netherlands) took two shots on goal.
JMU finished with the advantage on shots (16-11), while UR held the upper hand in corners (7-6). Eveline Zwager paced the Dukes with two goals and assisted on the third.
Spider goalkeeper Erika Latta (Midlothian, Va.) made four saves and allowed three goals on 15 shots faced.
The Spiders are back in action Friday, Sept. 10, at College Park, Md., when Richmond takes on American at 7 p.m. on the BIG10 Network Plus. UR returns to Crenshaw Field, Sunday, Sept. 12 to host Miami (Ohio) at 11 a.m.
