09/12/2021 | Women's Soccer
RICHMOND, Va. – University of Richmond women's soccer closed out the non-conference portion of the 2021 season in superb fashion Sunday afternoon. The Spiders defeated the visiting Coastal Carolina Chanticleers 2-0 at President's Field in the final non-Atlantic 10 match of the year. Richmond is 2-4-1 on the season, and 2-0-1 at home. Coastal Carolina falls to 2-3-1 with the loss.
The Spider offense was paced by freshman Emma Coleman (Vienna, Va.) who had four shots, two on frame and her first collegiate goal in 56 minutes of play. Molly Wierman (Sea Girt, N.J.) scored in her third-consecutive match, on two shots and assisted the Coleman goal. Molly Morgan (Upper Arlington, Ohio) added her second assist of the season in the contest. Caroline Lydecker (Ormond Beach, Fla.), Hannah Antonick (Virginia Beach, Va.), Gianna Lucchest (Hamilton, N.J.), Catie Groves (Denver, Colo.), Emma Kennedy (Blacksburg, Va.), Caitlin Sutton (Clifton, Va.) and Nora Santelli (Shaker Heights, Ohio) each added a shot as Richmond outshot Coastal Carolina 13-5.
Taylor Montague (Durham, N.C.) got the start in net. She played the full 90 minutes, picking up a save to record the first shutout of her career. The Spider defense limited the Chanticleers to just five shots in the contest, two on frame and added a team save.
The Spiders got on the board in the 58th minute of play. Wierman brought the ball up the right side of the 18-yard box and lofted a pass to the middle where it found Coleman. Coleman finished with a shot off her left foot that found the net to put the Spiders up.
It was Wierman who found the netting to double up the Spiders score in the 65th minute. Morgan played a ball in from the far left corner where it bounced around and found Wierman on the right of the post. She sent a high arcing shot towards the goal where it hit off the right post and ricocheted in for the goal.
The Spider defense was solid for the full 90 limiting the Chanticleers chances in their attacking third.
Richmond returns to President's Field Sunday afternoon as it opens Atlantic 10 play against the St. Bonaventure Bonnies at 1 p.m.
