RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond field hockey team moved to 2-0 in Atlantic 10 play after capturing a 3-1 victory over La Salle University at Crenshaw Field Friday night.
The Spiders move to 2-6 on the season while the Explorers fall to 4-5 on the year and 0-1 in league action.
Junior Regan McCrossan (Wexhaw, N.C.) put the Spiders on the board in the first quarter, chipping in a shot over the La Salle goalkeeper. McCrossan connected on a hard pass from Steffie Bongers (Weert, The Netherlands) off of a corner play, fed by junior Tess Keppel (Baltimore, Md.).
The Spiders took a 2-0 lead into the half, after senior Olivia Frazier (Cary, N.C.) fired a shot past La Salle's goalkeeper into the lower right corner of the cage early in the second quarter. Junior Lindsey Frank (Gansevoort, N.Y.) sent the pass to Frazier from midfield for the assist.
Frank scored her third goal of the season early in the fourth quarter, ripping a loud shot from the top right of the circle into the lower right corner of the cage. Bongers took the ball out of the corner play out of the circle to feed Frank for the goal.
La Salle quickly answered with a goal of their own in the 51st minute of the game, pushing a shot just past UR goalkeeper Erika Latta (Midlothian, Va.). Latta and the Spider defense held the Explorers to just seven shots with three on goal and collecting two saves.
Richmond dominated on the offensive third of the field, taking 24 shots with 13 on goal. The Spiders also held a 7-4 advantage on penalty corners.
Richmond returns to Crenshaw Field for an Atlantic 10 Conference contest against No. 8 Saint Joseph's Sunday for a 12 p.m. start on ESPN+.
