WASHINGTON, D.C. – The University of Richmond soccer team took its first Atlantic 10 road trip of the season Sunday when the Spiders faced George Washington in Washington, D.C. Despite a late goal, Richmond suffered its first conference loss of the year, 3-1. With the loss, Richmond drops to 4-5-1 overall, 2-1-0 in A-10 play while GW earned its first win of the year to improve to 1-8-2 overall and 1-2-0 in conference action.
"Today we faced a good GW team that was more hungry for the win and competed harder today. This is a great learning experience for our players. Winning on the road in the A-10 is extremely hard to do, and we need to find a way to make that happen this coming week," said head coach Marty Beall.
GW struck first in the match and ended Richmond's streak of not allowing a goal at 389 minutes when Elizabeth Cruz came off the bench and netted her first goal of the year in the 24th minute. Cruz sniped it inside the right post from the left side of the box to give GW the 1-0 lead.
That score would hold going into halftime despite the Spiders outshooting the Colonials 4-3 with all three shots reaching the target.
The Colonials doubled their lead in the 66th minute when Madi Coyne headed it in off GW's third corner kick of the match, and then the Colonials extended the lead to 3-0 in the 77th minute.
Jessie Prillaman helped the Spiders avoid getting shut out with her team-leading fifth goal of the season in the 88th minute. Molly Wierman sent in a cross from the far side of the box, and Prillaman was able to head it in to cut Richmond's deficit to 3-1 in the closing minutes of regulation.
Prillaman led the Spiders with three shots on the day while Emma Coleman put two shots on goal. TJ Anderson, Molly Wierman, and JoJo McShane also added a shot each for the Spiders.
Taylor Montague played the full time in goal for Richmond and recorded three saves.
Richmond continues on the road next week with a visit to Duquesne on Thursday, Sept. 30. The match is set to start at 7 p.m.
