RICHMOND, Va. – Athletes Unlimited Basketball announced today the final 44-player roster for its inaugural season set to begin January 26 in Las Vegas, and Richmond Athletics Hall of Famer Becca Wann-Taylor made the cut.
Wann-Taylor, a two-sport student-athlete at the University of Richmond, is one of four players who earned a spot in Athletes Unlimited via the Open Tryouts last month in Atlanta. The former Spider basketball and soccer player was inducted into the Richmond Athletics Hall of Fame in 2019.
For Spider soccer, Wann-Taylor was an NSCAA Division I All-American, two-time Atlantic 10 Player of the Year, three-time All A-10 selection, A-10 Rookie of the Year and two-time team captain. She was the first Spider to be named A-10 Rookie and Player of the Year.
Wann-Taylor finished her Spider soccer career in the top three in 12 categories, including first all-time in points per game (1.52) and game-winning goals (15). She finished third all-time in points (76) and second all-time in goals (34). Additionally, she was a member of the USA U20 gold medal-winning women's soccer team.
As fall turned to winter, Wann-Taylor traded her soccer cleats for basketball sneakers. Despite missing her senior season due to injury, she still played in 84 career games, with 704 points and 522 rebounds, including 10 double-doubles. She was a two-time preseason All-Conference selection.
Wann-Taylor was named A-10 Most Improved Player as a sophomore, when she averaged nine points per game and led the team in field goal percentage (.520) and assists (87).
Her junior season, Wann-Taylor was second on the team in scoring (11.1 ppg) and steals (51), and led the Spiders in assists (93) and rebounds per game (7.9). She scored a career-high 21 points at state rival James Madison.
Following graduation, Wann-Taylor began her career as a women's college basketball official. She has worked games at the Division I, II and III levels, including conferences such as the ODAC, CIAA, Big East and CAA. She also became an assistant coach for Midlothian High School's boy's basketball teams, where former Spider Jarhon Giddings was named head coach in April 2018.
In total, the 44 women named to the Athletes Unlimited roster hail from 18 states and the District of Columbia, and 43 have represented a total of 37 NCAA Division I institutions. Forty-two have spent time in international professional leagues, while 16 have WNBA experience across 97 seasons and six championships. A quarter of the members of Athletes Unlimited Basketball were rostered in the WNBA at the conclusion of the 2021 season.
Athletes Unlimited Basketball's first season will take place in Athletes Unlimited Arena at the Sport Center of Las Vegas, less than two miles from the Las Vegas Strip. Games will be broadcast in the U.S. on either FOX Sports, CBS Sports Network, Bally Sports or Athletes Unlimited digital channels. Additional international media partners will also be added.
