01/19/2022 | Women's Basketball
FAIRFAX, Va. –  After giving up the first basket of the game against George Mason Wednesday night, the University of Richmond women's basketball team would never trail again as the Spiders returned to the win column with a 78-64 victory over the Patriots on the road.

Four Spiders scored in double figures and Richmond's lead reached as much as 23 points in the game as the Spiders improved to 12-6 overall and 3-2 in Atlantic 10 play this season. George Mason dropped to 6-9 overall and 0-3 in conference play.

"I loved how this group started the game today. We shared the ball, played with great pace, and did a much better job on the boards," said head coach Aaron Roussell. "We obviously weren't able to maintain the hot start, but we got big stops and big buckets during key stretches to hold George Mason at bay. It was a great bounce-back win, and we showed a lot of promise with how we played."

The Spiders responded to Mason's game-opening basket with an 11-0 run spanning 3:09 in which Richmond was 4-of-5 from the floor. Back-to-back Spider triples from Kate Klimkieiwcz and Claire Holt later pushed the lead to 21-8 and forced a Mason timeout at 2:36, and Grace Townsend's layup with six seconds to go sent the Spiders into the second quarter up 28-14.

Mason opened the second frame with five straight points to cut its deficit back to single digits at 28-19, but Katie Hill responded with a 3-pointer to get the Spiders going in the frame. Emma Squires hit two straight threes before Addie Budnik added another at 2:09 to extend Richmond's lead to 42-30, and the Spiders led 43-32 at the half.

After the Patriots once again cut their deficit to single digits early in the third, Townsend snagged a board on the defensive end and took it all the way down for a layup to return Richmond's lead to double digits. Budnik added to the lead with a layup and a pair of free throws midway through the frame, and she posted 14 points in the third including 6-of-6 from the line to help the Spiders lead 63-48 going into the final frame.

Early triples from Kylee Lewandowski and Siobhan Ryan in the fourth helped spark an 8-0 Spider run while Mason went through a scoring drought spanning 4:11 as Richmond pushed its lead to 71-50. Sydney Boone closed out the scoring for the Spiders in the game with a trey at 3:26 to put Richmond up by 23 points.
