Spiders Fall to Dayton at Home
01/26/2022 | Women's Basketball
RICHMOND, Va. –  The University of Richmond women's basketball team dropped a home contest to Dayton Wednesday evening at the Robins Center, 80-57. After scoring just one point in the first quarter, the Spiders (12-8, 3-4 A-10) were only outscored by three points the rest of the game while the Flyers (15-3, 6-0 A-10) extended their win streak to nine games.

"It was a really rough night for us obviously, but I thought we bounced back really well in the second quarter," said head coach Aaron Roussell. "We cut it to 13, had the ball twice, and kind of threatened to make it a game and put some pressure on Dayton. Unfortunately for us, it was a rough start to the third quarter defensively, but I actually thought our offense was clicking. I thought our offense played well in the second and third quarter. We've got some things we need to clean up defensively, and to be honest probably offensively as well."

After a slow start, Richmond bounced back in the second quarter to outscore Dayton 23-20 in the period on 57 percent shooting from the field. Addie Budnik made the first field goal of the game with a quick layup seconds into the second frame. Later, Grace Townsend set Budnik up for a triple before swiping a pass and sending it up to Kate Klimkiewicz who took it all the way for a layup. Richmond then went on a 9-0 run while holding the Flyers scoreless for 3:02, and Budnik's triple at 1:08 cut the deficit down to 13 points. She posted 10 points in the second quarter, including a perfect 2-of-2 beyond the arc, and finished the game with 14 points and four blocks.

Grace Townsend shot 4-of-4 from the field and 2-of-2 from the charity stripe for 10 points in the third frame, and she closed the night with a team-high in scoring and on the glass with 16 points and six rebounds.

The Spiders make the trek to Saint Louis this weekend for a matchup against the Billikens Sunday, Jan. 30 at 2 p.m. The game will air on CBS Sports Network.
