Spiders 7th in preseason poll, Burton a First Team selection at A-10 Media Day
10/13/2022 | Men's Basketball
BROOKLYN, N.Y. – The Richmond Spiders men's basketball team placed seventh in the Atlantic 10 Preseason Poll, the conference announced Thursday at its annual media day at Barclays Center. Richmond senior Tyler Burton, UR's leading scorer and rebounder last season, was named Preseason First Team All-Atlantic 10.
The Spiders, defending Atlantic 10 champions, received 276 points from a panel of the conference's head coaches and leading media members, narrowly behind 2022 regular-season champion Davidson (294 points). George Mason was picked fifth in the poll, just below A-10 newcomer Loyola Chicago. VCU was third, Saint Louis placed second, and Dayton was first. The Flyers collected 22 first-place votes, with the other seven going to the Billikens.
2022 is the fourth straight season the Spiders have placed in the top half of the A-10 Preseason Poll, tying Richmond's longest such streak (2013-16) since the conference eliminated divisions in 2005.
Burton, who led the Spiders with 16.1 points and 7.7 rebounds per game last season, was a Preseason Second Team All-A-10 selection in 2021. He's just the sixth Spider to earn Preseason First Team All-Conference honors under Chris Mooney, joining Jacob Gilyard (2019-21), Grant Golden (2018, 2021), T.J. Cline (2016), Kendall Anthony (2014), and Kevin Anderson (2009-10). 2022 marks the fifth straight season Richmond has had at least one player on the Atlantic 10's Preseason First Team. That's the second-longest active streak in the conference behind Davidson (8 straight seasons).
Tickets are currently available for the 2022-23 season, which will open on November 7 as the Spiders host VMI at the Robins Center. Richmond fans are encouraged to visit spides.us/mbbtix or call 1-877-SPIDER1 to purchase tickets.
