RALEIGH, N.C. -- Spiders sophomore Cole Ekert carded a second straight even-par 72 in the final round of NC State's Wolfpack Intercollegiate Sunday, finishing the 54-hole event in a tie for 16th place at 217 (+1). His 41 pars during the tournament were the third most of any player in the field of 84.
"You had to accept two putts from 15-30 feet on those greens," said Ekert of the layout at the Lonnie Poole Golf Course. "There were certain holes where I was confident that I would have birdie looks under 15 feet, so I never tried to force in putts from outside of that range. I think I had just one three putt this week which I was happy with considering how difficult the greens were."
It was the third top-25 finish in three fall tournaments for Ekert, who tied for 22nd at Yale's MacDonald Cup last month and placed 14th at the season-opening VCU Shootout.
As a team, Richmond combined to shoot 891 (+27), 12th in the 14-team field. Two other Spiders finished in the top 50, as grad student Michael Childress and freshman Drew Carlin tied for 50th place at 225 (+9).Â
Senior Lou Baker tied for 59th at 227 (+11) and senior Ben Cooper was two shots back at 229 (+13) in a tie for 66th place.Â
"We were never in a spot to make any kind of run this week," said coach Adam Decker. "Our putting was not great, and we need to clean that up a bit."
Richmond will conclude its fall season next weekend at the Furman Intercollegiate in Greenville, S.C.
"We need to get more competitive in this final event of the fall," said Decker. "I think the guys will be hungry to go into the offseason on a high note."
