Greenville, N.C.— The University of Richmond swimming and diving program kicked off its season Saturday with a dual against East Carolina where the Spiders fell, 159-141.
Richmond finished second and third in the 200 medley relay when Mattie Williams, Christina Levins, Abby Fuller and Lauren Medlin swam a 1:46.91 for runner-up and the squad of Katelyn Pennell, Sara Greene, Claire O'Shaughnessy and Lucy Yeomans clocked a 1:47.62 for third.
Freshman Katie Chignell swam a 10:31.22 in the 1,000 free in her collegiate debut, good enough for second.
Fellow first year Caitlyn Hughes touched at 1:52.82 to win the 200 free, while Alexa Connors followed with a 1:58.06 for third.
Another freshman, Caroline Weldon, finished with a time of 58.36 for second in the 100 back and Williams followed with a 58.56 for third.
Sara Greene took second in the 100 breast with a 1:07.11 marking, while Emma Martin took third in the 200 fly with a 2:10.37.
Abby Fuller (24.31) and Lauren Medlin (24.38) went 2-3 in the 50 free and the Spiders took the top two spots in the 100 free with Medlin taking first in a time of 53.36 and Hughes followed right behind with a 53.37 for second.
Weldon won the 200 back with a 2:04.68 and Pennell followed with a 2:05.07 for second.
The 200 breast saw Greene take third in a time of 2:24.92, while the 500 free saw Chignell take home another second-place finish with a 5:08.27.
Claire O'Shaughnessy swam a 58.33 for third in the 100 fly and Pennell won the 200 IM with a 2:08.95 marking.
Richmond went 1-3 in the 400 free relay when Hughes, Lucy Yeomans, O'Shaughnessy and Medlin won with a 3:33.05 and Julia Krichev, Connors, Fuller and Carson took third with a 3:37.36.
On the 1-meter board, Lola Dragosavac took second with a score of 215.75 and freshman Tess Weatherhead finished third with a 210.60. The 3-meter contest saw the Spiders' best finish out of freshman Sally Harrington with 191.40 points for fourth.
The Spiders are back in action Oct. 21-22 when it hosts the Richmond Duals with Atlantic 10 visitors Davidson, George Mason and Duquesne.
