Nelson named A-10 Rookie of the Week

RICHMOND, Va. -- Spiders redshirt freshman Jason Nelson has been named the Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week, the conference announced Monday. Nelson, a 5'10" guard, averaged a team-high 17 points per game and shot 56 percent from the field in a wins vs VMI and Northern Iowa last week.

Nelson is the first Spider to win an A-10 Rookie of the Week award since December 31, 2018, when Jake Wojcik received the award after scoring 22 points in a win at South Alabama.

Nelson started at point guard in Richmond's season-opening 69-48 win vs VMI on November 7. He led the Spiders with 13 points, all in the second half, and became the first Richmond freshman to score 13 or more points without a turnover since February 20, 2019 (Andre Gustavson vs Fordham). November 11 vs Northern Iowa, Nelson led all players with 21 points while shooting 9-15 from the field in Richmond's 68-55 win. Nelson's 34 points through two games are the most by any Spiders freshman since 2011, when Kendall Anthony scored 37 points in his first two career games.

Nelson and the Spiders will take on Charleston on the road Monday before returning home to face Wichita State on Thursday at 7 PM at the Robins Center. Tickets for that game are available here.
