11/20/2022 | Women's Basketball
RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond women's basketball team outlasted the Hampton University Lady Pirates, 68-65 in overtime Sunday at Robins Center.
Richmond, now 4-1 on the season, heads on the road for the Navy Classic this holiday weekend. UR will face Idaho Saturday at 4 p.m. then quickly regroup to take on Northern Illinois Sunday at 3:30 p.m. in Annapolis, Md.
"We didn't shoot the ball particularly well today," head coach Aaron Roussell said. "But now two games in a row that these kids have come up big in the clutch and that's huge."
The Spiders held a 47-36 lead through three quarters, but a slow start to the third period gave the momentum to the Lady Pirates heading to the fourth.
Hampton doubled up the Spiders in the fourth, 22-11, led by Camryn Hill's nine of her 25 game-high points. Richmond did hold a five-point lead with less than three minutes to go, as Grace Townsend hit a jumper and Emilija Krista Grava sank a wide open three pointer from the corner. Hampton then capitalized on Richmond foul trouble and turnovers, scoring three free throws and a jumper to force overtime at 58-58.
Richmond regrouped for the extra period, netting the first three buckets. Addie Budnik tallied a layup before Katie Hill stole the ball and finished the fast-break play with a layup of her own. Townsend sank a three-pointer to push Richmond's lead out to seven, 65-58. Hampton scored seven points in the final three minutes but a second three-pointer by Townsend and huge defensive rebounds by Grava and Hill allowed Richmond to capture the victory.
Townsend led the Spiders with 19 points, with four three-pointers, and two steals, while Siobhan Ryan chipped in 16 points, with four three-pointers, eight rebounds and two assists. Hill tallied 13 points, seven rebounds, three assists and two steals as Grava came off the bench for a second-straight double-figure scoring performance, posting 12 points with two three-pointers and four rebounds. Budnik pulled down a season-high 11 rebounds, dished out four assists, blocked two shots and scored six points.
