Women’s Basketball Opens Navy Classic with Win Over Idaho
11/26/2022 | Women's Basketball
ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The University of Richmond women's basketball team collected an 80-49 victory over Idaho in the two programs first-ever meeting to open the 2022 Navy Classic at Alumni Hall Saturday afternoon.
Richmond, 5-1 on the season, will face Northern Illinois Sunday at 3:30 pm at Alumni Hall to close out the Navy Classic. NIU, also 5-1 for the year, defeated host Navy, 87-50, earlier Saturday.
"We had really good defensive energy all game," head coach Aaron Roussell said. "To hold Idaho to just 26 percent shooting is a huge credit for our players. While we weren't perfect offensively, putting up 80 points shows where this offense can go."
The victory also marks Roussell's 200th career win at the NCAA Division I level (200-113). Roussell amassed a record of 151-72 in seven seasons at Bucknell and has a current record of 49-41 at the helm of the Spiders.
The squads traded four lead changes in the first quarter before Richmond locked in on defense. The Spiders took advantage of Idaho's offense going cold and not scoring for the final 4:16 minutes of the period hold an eight-point lead, 24-16, into the second quarter.
Siobhan Ryan paced the Spiders offense in the first quarter, posting seven of her season-high 23 points and three rebounds. Grace Townsend and Maggie Doogan both chipped in five points. Townsend also pulled down four rebounds and blocked a shot in the opening period.
Doogan paced the Spiders in the second quarter with eight of her season-high 13 points and four rebounds. The UR defense held the Vandals to just six-points, as the Spiders dominated the boards, 15-9, to take a 40-27 lead into the locker room.
Idaho came out with more intensity in the third quarter, chipping away at UR's lead to get as close as 14 points with four minutes left in the period. The Vandals offense then cooled off, as UR closed the period on a 12-5 run and push the lead back to 21 at 60-39.
Ryan paced UR with two three-pointers while Addie Budnik chipped in five points and four rebounds. Emilija Krista Grava tallied four points, as Townsend sank a three-pointer, pulled down four rebounds and dished out three assists.
The Spiders dominated the final quarter, again capitalizing on a nearly seven-minute scoring drought by the Vandals icy offense. Ryan tallied eight more points, including two three-pointers, while Townsend captured her first double-double of the season with 10 points and 11 rebounds. Kylee Lewandowski tallied four points and two rebounds while Torin Rogers tallied her first collegiate points with a layup and two free throws.
