Comeback Complete As Men’s Lacrosse Topples Towson In Triple Overtime
02/26/2022 | Men's Lacrosse
RICHMOND, Va. – It's not how you start, it's how you finish. The University of Richmond men's lacrosse team rallied from an eight-goal first quarter deficit on the road and knocked off Towson 16-15 in triple overtime Saturday afternoon a Johnny Unitas Stadium. The Spiders found themselves in the eight-goal deficit only 11:22 into the game, but clawed their way back to even in the fourth quarter.
Graduate attack and Towson native Ryan Dunn (Towson, Md.) scored the game-winning goal with 16 seconds remaining in the third extra period, improving the Spiders to 2-1 on the year. The triple overtime victory marks just the second time in program history Richmond has played a three overtime game and the first since 2016. The Spiders are 2-0 all-time in such games, posting a 6-5 victory at Furman six years ago.
Sophomore midfielder Lance Madonna (East Syracuse, N.Y.) scored a career-high six goals in the victory while graduate midfielder Luke Frankeny (Wilmington, N.C.) added a season-best four goals. Madonna's six goals are tied for second-most in a single game in program history and the first since teammate Dalton Young (Chantilly, Va.) had six last season against High Point.
Redshirt sophomore goalie Devin Craven (McLean, Va.) was resilient in goal, bouncing back with a strong performance after allowing nine goals in the opening 15 minutes. Craven limited the Tigers to only six goals in the final 56:44 of the game and scoreless in 11:44 of overtime play. He finished with a career-high 21 saves, including two in the third overtime period. His 21 saves rank second all-time in program history, just one save shy of Jack Rusbuldt's program-record off 22 set in 2020.
Richmond found itself in a hole quickly, falling behind 5-0 in large part to a pair of early penalties. Towson would continue its offensive onslaught in the first quarter, extending the lead to 9-1 after only 11:22 gone from the game.
The Spiders could have easily folded in the face of adversity but they swung the momentum around big time in the second quarter. Richmond out-scored Towson 7-1 in the second quarter, trimming the deficit to a more manageable 10-8 margin at the halftime break.
Redshirt freshman Cooper Dainton (Hingham, Mass.) got the Spiders on the board first just 1:07 into the second quarter and added his second of the game less than four minutes later. Frankeny and Madonna scored early in the quarter, trimming the deficit to four goals. After a Towson goal, redshirt freshman Will Tazewell (Richmond, Va.) recorded his first career goal and Madonna added his second. Graduate attack Ryan Lanchbury (Burlington, Ontario) made it a two-goal game at the break, scoring with 18 seconds remaining in the half.
The teams settled in and traded goals throughout the third quarter. The Spiders were still down two goals heading to the fourth before Frankeny added his third and Madonna his sixth early in the quarter, tying the game at 13-13. Tazewell gave the Spiders their first lead with 9:48 remaining in regulation. The team traded goals with Frankeny giving Richmond a 15-14 lead with 7:26 remaining. Towson was able to force overtime as Nick DeMaio scored the tying goal with less than second remaining on the clock.
The overtime periods were high intensity as each team came up with big saves and caused turnovers keeping the game in the balance. Towson had a pair of chances in the third overtime but Craven came up big both times with saves, setting the table for the Spiders' final possession.
Richmond called a timeout with 59 seconds remaining in the third overtime period as the Spiders looked for the last chance. Dunn got the ball behind the Tigers' goal and made a move to get out in front. His jump shot beat Towson goalie Shane Brennan down low sending the Spiders home victorious.
Six different Spiders scored in the victory with Madonna and Frankeny leading the way with six and four each respectively. Tazewell and Dainton each tallied a pair of goals while Lanchbury and Dunn had one each.
Freshman faceoff Jared Chenoy (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) won 17-of-34 faceoffs Saturday, picking up seven ground balls on the day. Defender Jake Saunders (Oakville, Ontario) and Craven each added five ground balls apiece.
The Spiders return to action with a quick turnaround and a rare midweek game as they welcome in St. Bonaventure Tuesday afternoon. Faceoff is set for noon at Robins Stadium and will be streamed on ESPN Plus.
