Strong Second Half Lifts Men’s Lacrosse Over UMBC

RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond men's lacrosse team out-scored UMBC 7-3 in the second half helping the Spiders pull away from the Retrievers in a 14-9 victory Sunday afternoon. The Spiders posted a 6-1 scoring run to open the second half, improving to 4-3 overall on the season.
Nine different Spiders scored goals in the victory. Senior attack Ryan Dunn (Towson, Md.) led the way with three goals and an assist while graduate attack Ryan Lanchbury (Burlington, Ontario) posted six points, scoring two goals and dishing out four assists. Junior Dalton Young (Chantilly, Va.) added four assists in the victory.
Defensively, the Spiders forced UMBC into 21 turnovers in the win while only committing 11. Graduate defender Ray Baran (Berwyn, Pa.) led the way with three caused turnovers as five different Spiders had two or more caused turnovers. Goalie Devin Craven (McLean, Va.) posted six saves on the day, limiting the Retrievers to nine goals.
After UMBC (2-3) scored the game's first goal, the Spiders responded with three-straight goals taking a 3-1 lead. Freshman Cooper Dainton (Hingham, Mass.) got things going with his fifth goal of the season while senior defender Jake Saunders (Oakville, Ontario) tallied his first career goal on the extra-man opportunity for the two-goal advantage. The Spiders took a 5-3 lead at the end of the first quarter when Lance Madonna (East Syracuse, N.Y.) tallied his first of the day with four seconds remaining in the opening quarter.
Madonna opened the second quarter with his second-straight tally and his 13th goal of the year for a 6-3 edge. Dunn notched his second of the game giving the Spiders a 7-3 lead before UMBC answered back with three straight of its own making it a one-goal game at the halftime break.
Richmond had a strong third quarter, out-scoring UMBC 4-1. The Spiders scored the first two goals of the period, including Dunn recording a hat trick with his third. Richmond went into the fourth quarter with an 11-7 lead as graduate midfielder Luke Frankeny (Wilmington, N.C.) tallied two-straight.
The barrage continued to start the fourth quarter with Lanchbury scoring his first before Shayne Grant (San Diego, Calif.) scored his first of the year in transition off an assist from Matt Civitella (Paoli, Pa.).
The Spiders open Southern Conference play next Saturday when they face off against Hampton. It will be the first and only SoCon regular season meeting as the Pirates are members of the SoCon for 2022 only.
