RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond football program, in conjunction with Colonial Athletic Association Football, announced an 11-game schedule for the 2022 season Tuesday, highlighted by five home games at Robins Stadium.
The Spiders open the season Sept. 3 when they travel to Charlottesville for a meeting with Atlantic Coast Conference foe Virginia. The game will be the Spiders' 35th meeting all-time against the Cavaliers and the first meeting since 2018. Richmond has split the last two meetings with Virginia, winning 37-20 in 2016 before falling in 2018. This year's game is the first of a two-game series with the Spiders set to return to Charlottesville in 2024.
Richmond opens the home portion of the schedule the following week welcoming in Saint Francis Sept. 10 to Robins Stadium. This marks the second meeting all-time against the Red Flash and the first-ever at Robins Stadium. Saint Francis was scheduled to play in Richmond during the 2018 season, but the game was moved due to Hurricane Florence. The Spiders traveled to Loretto, Pa., and came home with a 35-27 victory on a pair of touchdowns in the final seconds.
The Spiders close out the non-conference schedule Sept. 17 traveling to Lehigh. The game will be a return contest for the Spiders after posting a 31-3 victory over the Mountain Hawks last year at Robins Stadium.
Richmond opens its 16th season of Colonial Athletic Association play at home against Stony Brook Sept. 24. The game will be the annual Family Weekend on campus for the University of Richmond.
The Spiders travel to Elon Oct. 1 before welcoming in defending CAA Champion Villanova to Robins Stadium Oct. 15. The Spiders and Wildcats will be meeting for the 39th time in program history dating back to 1955 and will be the meeting for the seventh-straight season. The teams have split the past eight meetings against each other but Villanova has won the last three meetings.
The Spiders travel down I-64 to face new CAA rival Hampton Oct. 22. The Pirates will be making their first appearance in the CAA this season and the game will mark the fourth meeting all-time between the programs. Richmond has won all three meetings (2005, 2014, 2015), including both games at Hampton. The Spiders play their second-straight road contest Oct. 29 traveling to Maine where they posted a 24-17 victory in the last meeting in the series in 2019.
Richmond opens the month of November at Robins Stadium for the annual Homecoming Game Nov. 5 against New Hampshire. The Spiders traveled to the Granite State last year and picked up their first win at UNH since 2000 with a 35-21 victory.
The Spiders are on the road for the final time in the regular season Nov. 12 traveling to Delaware. Richmond has won five out of the last seven meetings against the Blue Hens, including two straight. Last year, the Spiders posted a 51-27 victory over Delaware at home, scoring their most points in a CAA game since 2015.
Richmond closes out the regular season in normal fashion against rival William & Mary Nov. 19 at Robins Stadium. The game will be the 133rd meeting between the Spiders and the Tribe in "The South's Oldest Football Rivalry". The Spiders took over the all-time series lead in the Capital Cup last year with a 20-17 victory in Williamsburg to hold a 64-63-5 record all-time against the Tribe.
