WILMINGTON, N.C. -- The Richmond Spiders men's golf team combined for a team score of 293 (+5) in Monday's final round at the Seahawk Intercollegiate to finish the 54-hole event at 880 (+16), placing seventh in the 14-team field. Richmond's 293 in the final round matched its Round 2 score and was one shot better than the Spiders 294 in Round 1 Sunday morning.Â
"Steady is a good way to put it," said Spiders coach Adam Decker. "We are making enough birdies in our rounds to be competitive, but we are also making some sloppy bogies which takes some momentum away."
Junior Lou Baker led all Spiders with an even-par 216, tied for 10th in the field. It was Baker's third top-10 finish in three full-field tournaments this spring.Â
Freshman Cole Ekert, the reigning Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week, tied for 28th at 221 (+5). Ekert recorded a team-high 11 birdies during the event.Â
Senior Michael Childress was two shots further back at 223 (+7), tied for 37th place. Childress led Richmond with an even-par 72 in windy conditions at the Country Club of Landfall in the final round Monday, and played the par 3s in even par during the event, tied for fifth-best in the field.Â
Sophomore Garrett Clark tied for 43rd in the field at 225 (+9), and junior Ben Cooper tied for 50th at 227 (+11). Senior Carter Cook, competing as an individual, tied for 48th at 226 (+10).Â
Richmond has placed in the top half of the field in all three of its events this spring. Earlier this month, the Spiders placed fourth among 11 teams at the Forest Creek Collegiate and finished third among 17 teams at the Ross Collegiate Classic.Â
"If everybody is able to eliminate a few mistakes each round we will be in great shape as we think about heading to the next couple of events and then into the conference championship," said Decker.
The Spiders will compete this weekend at the Irish Creek Collegiate in Kannapolis, N.C. Rounds 1 & 2 are scheduled for Saturday, and Round 3 will be played on Sunday.Â
