KANNAPOLIS, N.C. -- Richmond Spiders freshman Cole Ekert fired a 3-under 68 in the final round of the Irish Creek Intercollegiate at The Club at Irish Creek Sunday, the lowest round of his collegiate career. Ekert combined three birdies with 15 pars to jump up 24 spots on the individual leaderboard, finishing the event tied for 46th at 3-over 216.Â
"I hit a few solid iron shots early in the day and rode that confidence throughout the entire round," said Ekert. "I also just kept the course in front of me by being smart with my targets which is something that Coach [Adam] Decker stresses, so that helped me take bogeys out of play and give myself looks for birdie on most holes."
Ekert made 39 pars over three rounds, tied for the fifth-most in the field. His 68 Sunday was Richmond's only round in the 60s in the event. The Spiders played the final two rounds in a combined 2-under par but couldn't erase their score of 304 (+20) in the opening round Saturday morning. Richmond finished at 870 (+18), 14th in the 15-team field.Â
Junior Ben Cooper also shot under par in Round 3 Sunday, recording a 1-under 70 with five birdies and four bogeys. Cooper finished tied for 59th at 218 (+5), the only other Spider to place in the top 60. Cooper's 12 birdies over three rounds were twice as many as any other Spider. Â
Richmond will return to competion in two weeks at Penn State's Rutherford Intercollegiate in State College, Pa. on April 16-17.Â
