Men’s Basketball records best national rank in attendance in 30 years
03/08/2022 | Men's Basketball
RICHMOND, Va. – Richmond men's basketball's average attendance during the 2021-22 season ranked 78th across Division I, marking the first time the Spiders have finished in the top 80 in the nation since 1992-93. An average crowd of 6,072 attended Richmond's 15 home games during the season. The Spiders bucked the national trend, as home games across Division I averaged 4,132 fans in 2021-22, a drop of just over 11 percent from the 2019-20 season. (Fan attendance was not permitted or restricted in 2020-21 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.)
"I thought the atmosphere at the Robins Center was tremendous this season and I want to thank everyone who came out to a game to support the Spiders. The noise and energy gave our team a significant advantage at every home game," said Richmond coach Chris Mooney. The Spiders went 11-4 at home this season.
The increase in attendance from 2019-20 was due in part to a dramatic jump in student attendance, with an average of 708 students attending each game while classes were in session. That's up 65 percent from 2019-20, when student attendance averaged 429 during the fall and spring semesters.
Richmond has ranked in the top 100 in the nation in attendance in each of the previous 10 seasons (not including 2020-21), but 2021-22 is the Spiders best ranking since 1992-93, when UR finished 69th in D-I with an average crowd of 7,214 in Dick Tarrant's final season.
Only two Atlantic 10 schools, Dayton and VCU, played in front of larger crowds than the Spiders in 2021-22. It's the first time Richmond has finished in the top three in the conference in attendance since 2017-18.
With a total enrollment of 4,002, Richmond was the smallest school in the nation to average at least 6,000 fans in 2021-22, the 50th season of basketball at UR's Robins Center.
