STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- Richmond freshman Cole Ekert fired a 3-over 74 Sunday in the third and final round of Penn State's Rutherford Intercollegiate to finish the 54-hole event at 220 (+7), tied for 18th in the field of 78. It was Ekert's third top-20 finish this season, tied for the most of any Spider.Â
"It was convincing that I could finish solidly in a field with some other good players," said Ekert. "I felt like I was close to contending with the guys at the top. I just need to be a bit more consistent at times and clean up some errors around the greens to give myself a chance to win."
As a team, the Spiders finished at 901 (+49), 13th in the 14-team field. Junior Lou Baker shot 74 Sunday after registering a pair of 76s Saturday. Baker tied for 52nd at 226Â (+13). Junior Ben Cooper was the only other Spider to finish in the top 70, tying for 58th at 228 (+15).Â
Richmond will return to competition on April 29 with the first round of the Atlantic 10 Championship at Reunion Resort in Orlando, Fla.
"We didn't have the week we were looking for as a team by any means, but it's been good for us to face some adversity now so that we can be hungry moving forward and leading into the conference tournament," said Ekert.Â
