Spiders Battle Back, Fall 10-9 in Atlantic 10 Semifinals
04/29/2022 | Women's Lacrosse
Amherst, Mass. – The second-seeded University of Richmond women's lacrosse team battled for 60 minutes, but ultimately fell to Saint Joseph's, 10-9, in the Atlantic 10 tournament semifinal at UMass' Garber Field Friday.
The third-seeded Hawks jumped to an early two-goal lead within the game's first three minutes, but the Spiders responded back when Sarah Roycroft fed a pass to Colleen Quinn in front of the cage for Richmond's first tally of the game.
Just over two minutes later, Roycroft found Grace Muldoon inside the eight-meter mark where the Atlantic 10 All-Rookie Team selection fired a left-handed shot across her body to tie things at the end of the first quarter.
From there, the Spiders were forced to play catchup as Saint Joseph's netted five unanswered goals before Roycroft split a pair of Hawks' defenders and continued her standout game with a goal of her own. Just under two minutes later, Lindsey Frank took the ball all the way in from the point and fired a low bounce shot past the right leg of First-Team All-Conference goalkeeper Jorden Concordia.
The Hawks scored one more as time expired in the half to make it an 8-4 ballgame at the break.
Scratching for a comeback, the Spiders found itself on the board first in the third quarter when Arden Tierney ran around the cage, spun twice on a Saint Joseph's defender and fired off a shot to the back of the Hawks' cage.
Just 17 seconds later, Tierney fed a pass to Frank to put the Spiders within two. Saint Joseph's tallied another, then Frank secured the hat trick and her 50th goal of the year with an unassisted goal to close out the third.
Kendall Duffy scored on the free position, then Lindsey Frank fed a pass to Marymargaret Quinn for a turnaround goal at the 9:07 mark of the fourth. Frank's assist was the 146th of the season for the Spiders which ties a single-season program record.
Quinn's goal, though, would be the final points of the game as time ran out and Hawks ran away with the 10-9 decision.
On the defensive end, Delaney Galvin made 16 saves, while Jax Donohue scooped three ground balls.
Richmond ends its season with a 14-4 record and sends off eight seniors in Brittney Wright, Marina Miller, Lauren Kingsbury, Jillian Becker, Nicole Concannon, Caroline Atkinson, Evelyn Roberts and Delaney Galvin whose legacy, impact and dedication to the program will be felt for years to come.
