RICHMOND, Va. – University of Richmond junior attack Dalton Young (Chantilly, Va.) has been named Southern Conference Offensive Player of the Week while freshman defender Griffin Kology (Chatham, N.J.) has been named SoCon Defensive Player of the Week, the league office announced Tuesday.
Young and Kology helped the Spiders knock off defending National Champion and No. 2 Virginia Saturday afternoon at Robins Stadium. The win was the program's highest ranked win in program history and the first-ever win over the Cavaliers. Additionally, it snapped Virginia's 73-game winning streak against in-state foes, giving the Cavaliers their first in-state loss since 1977. The victory moved the Spiders back into the national rankings, checking in at No. 17 in both the USLA and Inside Lacrosse rankings this week.
Young earns his third SoCon Offensive Player of the Week of his career and the first one this season. He led the Spiders' 17-goal effort against Virginia with a game-high seven points. Young tied for the team lead with four goals while dishing out three assists. His seven points are tied for a season-high while his four goals are second-most in a single game this year.
Kology earns his first-ever SoCon Defensive Player of the Week honor of his career. The true freshmen helped keep the Cavaliers' high-flying offense to only 13 points, three goals under their season average. Kology marked up Connor Shellenberger, a Tewaaraton favorite, throughout the game, holding his to only one goal and three assists. He recorded a career-high six ground balls and forced one turnover.
The Spiders are back in action this weekend in a pivotal SoCon contest between two nationally ranked teams. The 17th ranked Spiders are on the road against No. 12 Jacksonville Saturday with faceoff set for 11 a.m. on ESPN Plus.
