DAVIDSON, N.C. – University of Richmond's Alden Mathes (Broomall, Pa.) battled on the mound to get out of the two-out, bases loaded situation with a deep fly ball out in right field to collect the 4-1 victory over the University of Rhode Island in the 2022 Atlantic 10 Conference Tournament on Wednesday.
Richmond, improving to 27-25 on the season, advances to face George Mason Thursday at 1:30 p.m. at Wilson Field on ESPN+.
The Spiders got on the board first in the fourth when Mathes scored on Johnny Hipsman's (Chester, N.Y.) infield single.
Richmond starter Jeremy Neff (West Palm Beach, Fla.) threw seven-plus shutout innings. Neff allowed one run on three hits and six walks while striking out a season-high 10 batters.
Mathes came in from center field in the eighth for Neff with two on and no outs. Rhode Island tied the game at 1-all, but Mathes was able to get out of the inning with a strike out to strand two.
Zach Lass (Mechanicsville, Va.) led off the bottom of the eighth with a double to right center. Next, D.J. Pacheco (Danvers, Mass.) and Christian Beal (Flossmoor, Ill.) both reached on a fielder's choices to load the bases with no outs and knock out URI's starter. Mathes helped his cause on the mound with a two-RBI single through the right side of the infield, scoring Lass and Pacheco to give the Spiders a 3-1 lead. Beal then tallied the Spiders third run of the inning on a ground out.
Returning to the mound in the ninth, Mathes struck out the first batter he faced. He then worked around a UR error, a base hit and walk that loaded the bases with a fly ball out to Lass in right field to secure the victory. Mathes moves to 3-2 on the season, as he scattered one hit and a walk while striking out two in two innings in relief.
