Spiders Blank Delaware in Home Opener
08/28/2022 | Women's Soccer
RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond soccer team picked up its first win of the season Sunday afternoon in front of a packed crowd that braved the heat to support the Spiders in their home opener at President's Field. Molly Wierman netted her second goal in her second consecutive game to help lead the Spiders to a 1-0 win over Delaware.
With the win, Richmond improves to 1-1-1 this season while the Blue Hens fall to 1-2-1.
"I couldn't be prouder of the entire team. This was definitely a full team win, and I'm excited to have started the home slate with the win. Our team defending and our press was absolutely fantastic today. We really limited a lot of Delaware's quality chances they normally would have. Our energy on the defensive side carries over to when we get the ball. Without the defensive effort, we can't keep possession, so it all starts with our team defending," said head coach Marty Beall. "I'm also really grateful for all the fans that came out today. I thought they did a fantastic job of giving great energy to our team out there battling in the heat."
In the 17th minute, Molly Morgan launched a long ball up the left side of the field to Emma Coleman who set Wierman up with a perfect cross to the right side of the box and Wierman was able to stuff it home with a wide open look on the right side of the goal.
The goal was Wierman's second of the season and proved to be the game-winner as the Spiders were able to hold off the Blue Hens for the full 90 minutes.
Richmond outshot Delaware 13-11 and held the advantage in corner kicks, 5-2. Goalkeeper Taylor Montague made two saves for her first shutout of the season, including a stop on a one-on-one situation early on in the fourth minute on the game.
The Spiders head back out on the road next week to face the Campbell Camels Thursday, Sept. 1 at 7 p.m.
