Spider Hockey Collects 3-1 Victory Over Tribe

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - The University of Richmond field hockey team dominated possession against William & Mary Friday night, collecting a 3-1 victory at Busch Field.Â
Richmond (2-1) hosts Towson Sunday, Sept. 4 at Crenshaw Field to open the squad's seven-game home schedule. The contest between the Spiders and Tigers is set for a noon start on ESPN-Plus.Â
William & Mary took an early lead, scoring in the 11th minute of the game. Richmond picked up their defensive pressure and held offensive possession to earn four penalty corners in the second quarter. With less than two minutes left in the first half, senior Regan McCrossan (Waxhaw, N.C.) tallied her second goal of the season, firing off a shot from the top of the circle to finish off a Spider fast-break to tie the game at 1-all at halftime.
At the midway point, Richmond held a 9-3 shots advantage, including 7-2 advantage shots on frame. The Spiders also collected five corners while not allowing any to the Tribe.Â
Sophomore Stevie Drum (Virginia Beach, Va.) got the Spiders going in the second half, tallying her first goal of the 2022 season 1:43 into the third quarter. Drum put the rebound off a McCrossan shot into the back of the goal to give Richmond a 2-1 lead.
Junior Madi Hyatt (Fredericksburg, Va.) added to the Spiders lead with a minute left in the contest, pushing a pass from Lindsey Frank (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) past the Tribe goalie.Â
The Spider defense, led by senior goalie Erika Latta (Midlothain, Va.), held the Tribe to just four shots in the second half with only two on frame and three corners. Latta collected three saves in the game. Senior Tess Keppel (Baltimore, Md.) was also credited with a defensive save, redirecting the shot on the Tribe's first penalty corner of the day.Â
