All Phases Excel In CAA Opening Win Over Stony Brook

Richmond (3-1) out-gained Stony Brook 434-154 in the win, limiting the Seawolves to their lowest yardage of the year offensively. The Spider defense forced Stony Brook into three turnovers, including a career-best two interceptions from Tyrek Funderburk (Indian Trail, N.C.). Funderburk return his first pick 30 yards for a touchdown, his first score of his career and the Spiders first defensive touchdown of the year.
Udinski, who entered the game leading the nation in completion percentage, finished the game 35-of-42 for 357 yards. Nine different Spiders caught passes with five different grabbing four apiece. Redshirt sophomore wide receiver Jasiah Williams (Petersburg, Va.) posted his first career 100-yard game, finishing with 10 receptions for 112 yards and two scores. Graduate Leroy Henley (Pompano Beach, Fla.) added six receptions for 62 yards and added two more receiving touchdowns.
Stony Brook (0-3) scored the game's first points before the Spiders answered back late in the first quarter with a three-yard pass from Udinski to Williams. Tight end Connor Deveney (Medford, N.J.) gave the Spiders a 14-7 lead as he hauled in a seven-yard pass early in the second quarter.
Henley capped an eight-play drive with a six-yard touchdown receptions at 5:44 in the second quarter. Defensive end Jeremiah Grant (South Orange, N.J.) pounced on a Stony Brook fumble on its first play of the ensuing drive, setting the Spiders back up. Udinski found Henley for a 20-yard scoring strike and a 28-7 lead.
The Seawolves gave it right back to the Spiders as their first pass on the following drive was picked off by Funderburk and returned 30-yards for the scoring. The touchdown was the Spiders' third in 58 seconds on the clock and gave them a 35-7 advantage at halftime.
Richmond continued to pour it on in the third quarter as Udinski connected with running back Savon Smith (Winchester, Va.) on a 60-yard catch and run touchdown, the longest reception of Smith's career. Redshirt freshman quarterback Kyle Wickersham (Metairie, La.) came on in relief and posted the Spiders' sixth touchdown pass of the game, hitting Ja'Vion Griffin (Williamston, N.C.) for a 12-yard strike. The score the was the first passing and first receiving touchdown in the careers of both Wickersham and Griffin, respectively.
The Spiders' defense capped the scoring in the fourth quarter after Jabril Hayes (Stephens City, Va.) downed a Aaron Trusler (Melbourne, Australia) punt at the one-yard line. Linebacker Jared Joseph (Charlotte, N.C.) broke through the Stony Brook line on a blitz and sacked the quarterback in the end zone for the safety and a 51-7 lead. The safety marked the Spiders' first safety since 2019.
The Spiders return to action next weekend when they travel to Elon for a matchup with the Phoenix. Game time is set for 2 p.m.
