KINGSTON, R.I. – Despite a double-double and a team-high 13 points from freshman Maggie Doogan, the University of Richmond women's basketball team dropped a tough battle against Atlantic 10 leader Rhode Island, 75-49, Wednesday evening on the road. The Spiders fell to 11-6 on the year and 1-3 in the A-10 while the Rams improved to 15-3 overall and 6-0 in conference play.
"It was a really tough night for us," said Head Coach Aaron Roussell. "We didn't play very well against VCU, and we had a week to think about this game. We felt good coming into the game today and payed really well the first 17 minutes. We had a few defensive miscues but things were clicking offensively but ultimately, we were missing shots and they got us a bit in transition and made a run before the half and continued into the second half."
The Spiders were led by Doogan, who recorded her first career double-double and shot 4 of 9 from the field, 4 of 8 from the free throw line and added a trey through 27 minutes. Sophomore Katie Hill was the second Spider in double figures with 10 points, shooting 4 of 11 from the field and a perfect 2 of 2 from the line. Hill also added seven rebounds on the evening while Doogan and junior Addie Budnik dropped three dimes each.
As a team, the Spiders shot 17 of 59 from the field (28.8%), 4 of 24 from deep (16.7%) and 11 of 20 (55%) from the line. UR also added 38 rebounds, eight assists, four steals and 11 points from 11 URI turnovers.
Hill put the Spiders on the board first with a layup courtesy of Budnik. The Rams quickly responded with a jumper of their own to go up 2-4, but a 4-0 run from UR gave the Spiders the lead, 6-4. After being tied at 11, a free throw from Hill and a trey from Doogan gave Richmond a 15-11 lead, but the Rams stayed neck-and-neck, having a slight 16-15 advantage at the quarter break.
In the first quarter, Hill paced the team with eight points, shooting 3 of 4 from the field and a perfect 2 of 2 from the line. Doogan chipped in three points through the first ten minutes while Budnik dropped two dimes.
In the second quarter, the Rams pushed ahead early, gaining a 23-18 lead with 8:30 left before the Spiders began to scratch back and tie the game at 25 from a trey courtesy of junior Siobhan Ryan. With 2:29 left in the half, the Rams went on an 8-0 run to bring Richmond into the locker room trailing 38-28.
Through the first 20 minutes the Spiders shot 11 of 34 (32.4%) from the field, 3 of 13 (23.1%) from deep and 3 of 6 (50%) from the free throw line. The team put up 20 rebounds, including seven offensive, six assists, three thefts and five points off six Ram turnovers. UR was paced by Ryan and Hill, who each put up eight points, while Doogan led the way with eight rebounds.
Out of the locker room, Budnik cut the lead to 30-40, but a 10-0 run from the Rams allowed URI to build a 50-30 lead with 5:50 left in the quarter. After exchanging possesions, the Rams were able to preserve their lead, 62-40 at the break.
In the final quarter, URI continued its scoring campaign with a quick layup and a trey before Hill ended the scoring drought with a layup to bring the score to 67-42 in favor of the Rams. With 1:20 left in the game, Doogan make a layup to cut the deficit to 73-49, but the Rams continued to apply pressure to the UR defense and took the game 75-49.
