Richmond, Va. – University of Richmond Head Football Coach Russ Huesman and the Colonial Athletic Association announced an 11-game 2023 schedule that includes six home dates at Robins Stadium.
The Spiders are excited to return to action in 2023 and are geared for more success after coming off a record-setting season in 2022. The team was No. 11 and 12 in the final rankings after going 9-4 including three wins over ranked opponents as well as the program's first shutout playoff victory when it beat Davidson, 41-0, in the first round.
The Spiders had 11 players named to the CAA's All-Conference team while offensive lineman Ryan Coll (Gainesville, Va.) and linebacker Tristan Wheeler (Bethlehem, Pa. ) were named All-Americans and quarterback Reece Udinski (North Wales, Pa.) was named the recipient of the Dudley Award, presented yearly to the top college football player in the state of Virginia.
With the help of fans, Richmond was dominant at home in 2022, putting together a 5-1 record at Robins Stadium while outscoring opponents 209-109 on their home field.
The Spiders begin the 2023 season with three-straight non-conference matchups. The Spiders kick off the season at home Sept. 2 when they host Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference opponent Morgan State, then the following weekend sees the team traveling to East Lansing, Mich. to play Big Ten opponent Michigan State on Sept. 9. The game will mark the first meeting between the teams and the first Big Ten opponent on Richmond's schedule since Maryland on Sept. 5, 2015.
Returning to Robins Stadium for week three, the Spiders conclude the non-conference slate when they host another MEAC team in Delaware State on Sept. 16
The conference season opens Sept. 23 with a trip to Long Island to face Stony Brook. Last season, the Spiders took down the Seawolves with an emphatic 51-7 victory at Robins Stadium.
Richmond is back home for the next two games, welcoming Hampton during Family Weekend on Sept. 30 followed by Maine on Oct. 7. The Spiders also met these teams on back-to-back weekends last season, taking down both on the road beginning with a 41-10 win over the Pirates followed by a 31-21 win against the Black Bears.
The Spiders travel to Kingston, R. I. for the first time since 2015 on Oct. 14 followed by a trip to new CAA rival North Carolina A&T on Oct. 21. The meeting will mark the second between the teams with Richmond winning at home against the Aggies in 2016.
Richmond then hosts the CAA's other newest edition, Campbell, on Oct. 28. The Spiders have never met the Camels and will battle during Richmond's homecoming celebration.
Nov. 4 brings up the bye week, before Elon comes to Robins Stadium Nov. 11. Finally, the Spiders will play for possession of the Capital Cup when "The Oldest Rivalry in the South" renews for the 133rd time at William & Mary on Nov. 18.
