GREENSBORO, N.C. — The Richmond Spiders fired a 5-under 283 in the final round of the UNCG Fall Invitational Tuesday, vaulting up the leaedrboard into a runner-up finish in the 19-team event. UR was led by freshman Maya Beasley, who birdied her final four roles en route to a 4-under 68 in Round 3 and finished the event at 2-under par (214), both the third-lowest individual round and the third-lowest tournament round in program history.
Beasley said she wasn't aware that her play had both her and the Spiders near the top of the leaderboard down the stretch of the 54-hole event, but was trying to stay focused on her next shot. "Once I made birdie on the 2nd hole (my 15th hole) it gave me a ton of confidence, and then from there I just trusted my game and knew that I could keep helping the team with more birdies," said Beasley.
The only Spiders to shoot a lower single round than Beasley's 4-under Tuesday are Hannah Lydic, who shot a 7-under 65 in last year's William & Mary Fall Invitational, and Annie Collom, who shot a 5-under 67 in a 2018 match vs Columbia. Beasley, who opened the event with a 76 (+4) in Round 1 and shot 70 (-2) in Round 2, finished the event tied for fourth in the field of 107 golfers.
In addition to Beasley, the Spiders also counted a pair of 1-over 73s from senior Rory Weinfurther and junior Christine Mandile in Round 3 and a 3-under 69 from sophomore Hannah Lydic. Richmond's Round 3 score of 5-under (283) smashed the program record for lowest single-round team score by four strokes.
Lydic is the only Spider to ever shoot a lower tournament score than Beasley's 2-under (214) over the last two days. She carded a record 11-under 205 at last year's W&M Fall Invitational as well as a 3-under 213 at the 2022 Nittany Lion Invitational. Tuesday, she finished in a tie for eight place at 2-over (218), securing her third top-10 finish in three events this season.
Weinfurther was one shot behind at 3-over par (219), tied for 13th place. Mandile, whose 73 (+1) in Round 3 was the lowest round of her career, tied for 36th at 11-over par (227), matching her lowest collegiate tournament score. Junior Lauren Jones tied for 68th at 19-over par (235).
Playing as an individual in her first collegiate event, freshman Heather Appelson tied for 82nd and +23 (239).
UR's runner-up finish was its best result in a tournament with a field this size or larger since 2013, when the Spiders placed second in the 28-team C&F Bank Intercollegiate in Williamsburg, Va. in March. Richmond's final score of 12-over par (876) is the second best ever for a Spiders team, behind only its 10-over par (874) at last year's Patriot League Championship.
"It feels good to have a second-place finish in just our third tournament," said Weinfurther. "It gives us good momentum going into our last tournament for the season and lots of confidence for spring. Personally, I feel proud of everyone because our days were long but we stayed focused and grinded until the end. This team has a lot of potential and this was just the beginning so I'm looking forward to the rest of the season!"
Richmond will finish its fall schedule on October 30-31 at the Mercer Invitational in Forsyth, Ga.
