Lydic Leads Spiders in Fall Finale

FORSYTH, Ga. — Spiders sophomore Hannah Lydic shot a 1-under par 215 over 54 holes to tie for second at the Mercer Invitational, her second runner-up finish in four events this fall. Lydic and senior Rory Weinfurther each fired even-par rounds of 72 in Tuesday's final round to lead the Spiders to a sixth-place finish in the 14-team field at 26 strokes over par (890).
After opening Round 3 with a bogey on the 15th hole at River Forest Golf Club, Lydic played her next 10 holes in 5-under par before falling back to even par.
"I put two tee shots in the hazard and out-of-bounds," said Lydic, "but because I was able to make a few birdies as life insurance in the beginning of the round I could just relax the rest of the day. I played calm and positive golf this week and that's the only way to play when you're waiting on every tee box."
Lydic also finished second at the Nittany Lion Invitational in September and now has four career top-two finishes in full-field events. Her 1-under (215) at the Mercer Invitational matched the fifth-lowest tournament score in program history.
"Consistency is key, I've put in the time and the reps over the summer and during the season which is what helped me stay strong until the last tourney," said Lydic.
As well as Lydic played, Richmond's shot of the tournament came from freshman Maya Beasley, who aced the 145-yard 11th hole with a 7-iron in Round 2 for her first career tournament hole-in-one. Beasley tied for 31st in the field of 76 individuals at 9-over par (225), four shots behind Weinfurther, who tied for 17th at 5-over par (221).
Sophomore Olivia Wilkie tied for 43rd at 14-over par (230), and senior Claire Yioulos tied for 66th at 25-over par (241).
The event was Richmond's fourth and final of the fall season. The Spiders will return to action at the Columbia Classic Moon Golf in Melbourne, Fla. on February 10-12.
"We went through some changes with our coach being out on maternity leave but we were able to be patient and trust the process over these past few months," said Lydic. "I'm really excited for what we can accomplish this spring."
