Baker leads Spiders at Georgetown Intercollegiate

ROCKVILLE, Md. — Lou Baker was Richmond Men's Golf top finisher at the Georgetown Intercollegiate, played in swirling winds on speedy greens at Woodmont Country Club on Sunday and Monday. Baker, a grad student, played the 54-hole event in 7 strokes over par (223), tied for 17th among the 75 golfers in the field. Baker led the Spiders to an eight-place finish among the 13 teams competing in the event.
"The wind was gusting which always makes it hard and the greens were lightning," said Baker. "There were a lot of tough pin positions too. But I found myself below the hole a lot which made it easier to eliminate bogeys."
This is Baker's 13th career top-20 finish and second in three events this season after tying for 15th at the season-opening Golfweek Fall Challenge in Pawleys Island, S.C.
Sophomore Drew Carlin (tied for 26th at 12-over 228) and junior Cole Ekert (tied for 29th at 13-over 229) joined Baker in the top 30.
Junior Patrick Isztwan finished at 18-over par (234), tied for 49th place. Freshman Jack LaPiana tied for 6th at +24 (240).
Richmond proved adept at playing the par 5s at Woodmont Country Club. Only Florida and Campbell were better than UR's combined 2-over par on the par 5s. But the Spiders combined to play the par 3s in 26-over par, the third-highest total in the field.
The Spiders will conclude their fall schedule this week at the Furman Intercollegiate at Furman Golf Club in Greenville, S.C. Rounds 1 & 2 will be played Sunday with Round 3 scheduled for Monday.
