Greensboro, N.C. – The University of Richmond football team went on the road Saturday and defeated one of the Coastal Athletic Association's newest members, North Carolina A&T, 33-10.
Backed by solid defensive and special teams play, the Spiders move to 5-3 on the season, while the Aggies move to 1-6.
Richmond capped its opening drive with a two-yard touchdown pass from Kyle Wickersham to Quanye Veney. Both Wickersham and Camden Coleman shared time at quarterback in the win.
With time winding down in the opening quarter, the Spiders punted on a three-and-out, but Richmond recovered on a muffed punt return when Trae Tomlinson jumped on the loose ball at the Richmond 45-yard line. Nine plays later and Andrew Lopez connected on a 21-yard field goal attempt to make it a 10-7 game.
Two offensive drives for A&T later, a pass tipped off an Aggies receiver and landed in the hands of Jabril Hayes, who took his second interception of the season 48 yards to the house for his first career pick six.
The following Spiders kickoff was returned for an A&T touchdown at the 9:14 mark of the second quarter to make it 17-10, then at the 3:10 mark of the same frame, Trey Mancuso blocked an A&T punt from it's own 36-yard line and Quintarius Jefferies picked it up and took to the end zone for his first career score.
The Aggies tacked on another field goal for their last score of the game before the teams headed to the locker room at half with the Spiders leading, 23-10.
With 8:26 left in the third quarter, Andrew Lopez kicked another successful field goal, this one from 35 yards out.
Finally, with 6:13 left in the game, Aaron Banks picked off his second interception of the season and scored his second touchdown of the season.
Up next, the Spiders return to Robins Stadium for Homecoming presented by Graduate Hotel Richmond and face the CAA's other newest member, Campbell, Oct. 28. Kickoff is set for 3:30.
