GREENVILLE, S.C. — Spiders grad student Lou Baker aced the 201-yard 14th hole at Furman Golf Club in Round 2 of the Furman Intercollegiate Sunday, helping the Spiders to a team score of 3-under par (281) in the second round. Baker's shot, a 7-iron, moved him from 3-over to 1-over in Round 2, and he played the remainder of the round in 1-under par to post an even-par 71 Sunday afternoon. Baker was joined by teammates sophomore Drew Carlin and freshman Quin Polin at 71 (E) in Round 2, and junior Cole Ekert's 3-under 69 slid the Spiders back to 2-under for the tournament, good for seventh among the event's 15 teams with Monday's final round remaining.
"I just stayed very patient," said Ekert of his approach to Sunday's Round 1 and 2. "I tried to be smart with my targets especially into those greens which were a bit tricky. I had a few tough holes at the end of my first round and the beginning of second round, but I got my ball striking going on my last nine holes or so and was able to ride that out until the end. 36-hole days are all about momentum and patience, so I tried to be as patient as possible and capitalize when my game felt good."
Ekert is tied for 15th among the 90 players on the individual leaderboard at 2-under par (140), one shot in front of Polin, who made his collegiate debut Sunday. Polin led the Spiders with a 1-under 70 in Round 1 Sunday morning.
"It was fun making my debut," said Polin. "Playing 36 holes is new for me and was a grind. I was trying to focus on staying patient. I knew that playing this much golf I was going to make mistakes and that I had to stay patient and try and bounce back."
Carlin will enter Monday's final round tied for 27th in the field at 1-over par (143), while Baker is tied for 47th at +4 (146). Senior Garrett Clark is tied for 76th at 9-over par (151).
Richmond will tee off in Round 3 Monday 9 AM.
