Spiders Smash Siena For Biggest Win in 11 Years
11/11/2023 | Men's Basketball
RICHMOND, Va. — The Richmond Spiders defeated Siena 90-48 at the Robins Center Saturday evening to improve to 2-0 on the season. Richmond's 42-point margin of victory was its largest since November 13, 2012, when UR defeated UNC Wilmington 101-58.
"We ran our offense and we got great looks," said grad student Isaiah Bigelow, who scored a game-high 17 points. "I think sometimes when we slow down and read the game and not be rushed by how they're defending us, I think we can be really good."
Bigelow shot 5-6 from the field as Richmond registered its highest field goal percentage in a game, 59.3 percent, since December 1, 2021 at Wofford (62.2 percent). Senior Dji Bailey added a career-high 14 points off the bench on 6-7 shooting. UR's starting backcourt both reached double figures, with senior DeLonnie Hunt scoring 11 and grad student Jordan King scoring 10 to while registering four of Richmond's 14 steals.
"I thought we really set a great tone," said Spiders Head Coach Chris Mooney. "We pressed a lot. We felt that we had a speed advantage. We feel like we have a fast team. And we converted a lot of those turnovers or steals into baskets."
The Spiders scored 31 points of 22 Siena turnovers while giving the ball away just eight times. Richmond also registered 21 assists, with King, Hunt, and centers Neal Quinn and Mike Walz each posting four.
"There was a stretch there in the second half where the ball was moving great and we were finding open guys. Having centers who can pass so well really helps that," said Mooney.
Richmond opened up a double-digit lead just over nine minutes into the game, when a layup by Quinn made the score 18-8 with 11:55 remaining in the opening half. A 21-5 spurt over the final nine minutes of the half put the Spiders in command at halftime, leading 43-22.
UR led by 31 midway through the second half and emptied its bench, with every player in uniform seeing action for a second straight game. Freshman Collin Tanner's jumper with 1:26 to play capped Richmond's scoring. The Spiders have now scored 90 points in each of their first two games of a season for the second time in program history, joining 2019-20.
"The biggest thing in terms of having a selfless group or a group that shares the ball is having good guys," said Mooney regarding the early cohesion shown by a team that has as many newcomers (8) as any in his 19 years at Richmond. "If you recruit a kid who has a lot of issues and a lot of troubles they're likely going to show up again. But if you recruit guys who are good guys, good teammates … then that cohesion and chemistry is going to come along more quickly."
Mooney and the Spiders will travel to Boston College on Wednesday for a 7 PM tip on ACC Network Extra.
