Spiders Tame Runnin’ Bulldogs on the Road Wednesday Morning

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Behind Maggie Doogan's fourth career double-double, the University of Richmond Women's Basketball team rolled past Gardner-Webb Wednesday morning, 80-53, in front of a crowd of over 2,000. With the win, the Spiders improved to 2-1 while the Runnin' Bulldogs fell to 0-3.

How it Happened
Both teams got off to a slow start as the Bulldogs held the Spider offense to eight points through the first eight minutes. Maggie Doogan sparked a stretch of offensive rhythm as she netted an open trey and Rachel Ullstrom followed the play with a layup to lift the Spiders to 13-6 with just under a minute in the first quarter. Grace Townsend would put up one more free throw in the quarter as the Spiders ended the first 10 minutes up 14-6.
The Spiders quickly got the ball rolling in the second quarter as Laren VanArsdale sparked a 7-2 run to push the Richmond lead to 21-8 with 7:37 left in the half. GWU cut the Spider lead to three, 26-23, but Townsend and Ullstrom would combine for five points to send the Spiders into the locker room up 31-23.
Out of the break, a trey from Townsend sparked a 7-2 run to give Richmond a 38-25 lead. Another 7-0 from the Spiders would see Richmond up 45-30 with 3:52 left in the quarter. The Spiders would then go on to score 10 points over four minutes to head into the fourth quarter up 55-35.
Throughout the fourth quarter, the teams exchanged back-and-forth buckets. The Runnin' Bulldogs would hold the Spiders to a 23-point lead with 6:37 left in the game before an 8-3 run sparked by Ullstrom would hand the Spiders the 80-53 victory.
