Spiders Down Maine in First Game of Vibrant Thanksgiving Classic

DES MOINES, Iowa – Behind Maggie Doogan's fourth-straight game in double figures, the University of Richmond Women's Basketball team shot lights-out in the final two quarters to pick up a dominating 77-43 win over Maine Friday afternoon on day one of the Vibrant Thanksgiving Classic in Des Moines. With the win, the Spiders improved to 4-1 on the young season and posted their fourth-straight game with a 20+ point win margin while the Black Bears fell to 3-2.

How it Happened
The Black Bears got a quick layup off before five points from Addie Budnik and Maggie Doogan put the Spiders back into the lead. Four more points from Budnik with 3:06 left in the first quarter would push the Spider advantage to 15-7. Maine chipped away at the lead with an 9-0 run before Budnik recorded a layup to end the first quarter with a narrow Spider lead, 17-16.
In the second quarter, Maine tied the game at 23 as both teams exchanged points in the first four minutes. Doogan would then go on to spark a 6-0 run to give Richmond a 29-23 advantage. After the Black Bears cut the deficit to four, 29-25, a 7-0 run would give the Spiders another 11-point advantage, 36-25 with 2:08 left in the half. After Doogan scored her 19th point of the half off a free throw, Maine would get one more shot off as time expired to send Richmond into the locker room up 38-30.
Out of the break, the Spiders went on a dominating 11-0 run sparked by Doogan to give the Spiders a 49-30 advantage. Maine would get a couple of shots off to cut the Spider lead to 50-36, but final free throws from Doogan and Grace Townsend would have Richmond ahead 53-36 heading into the final 10 minutes.
Richmond continued to be a threat offensively in the fourth quarter as Townsend gave the Spiders five points over two minutes to bring the score to 58-36. Following another 8-0 run with efforts from Laren VanArsdale, Melissa Mwanza and Rachel Ullstrom, Kylee Lewandowski and Ullstrom would combine for seven points to hand the Spiders the 77-43-point win.
