Spiders Silence Drake Saturday Afternoon in Vibrant Thanksgiving Classic

DES MOINES, Iowa – Despite a slow start in the first quarter, the University of Richmond Women's Basketball team outscored Drake 30-7 in the second quarter en route to a 74-66 win over the Bulldogs in game two of the Vibrant Thanksgiving Classic Saturday afternoon inside the Knapp Center. With the win, the Spiders snapped a Bulldog eight-game home win streak and improved to 5-1 on the year while Drake fell to 4-2.

How it Happened
The Spiders got off to a slow start, as the Bulldogs went on a 6-0 run with back-to-back treys to start the game. Addie Budnik got the scoring campaign going for Richmond with a three pointer of her own to half the deficit, 6-3 with 7:27 left in the quarter. A minute later, Grace Townsend put up a wide-open layup to bring the Spiders within one, 6-5. After Laren VanArsdale netted a second-chance layup, Drake was able to go on another 6-0 run to build an 11-point lead, 18-7 with 1:36 left on the clock. Maggie Doogan would get a final trey off as time expired as the Bulldogs led Richmond through the first 10 minutes, 19-12.
In the second quarter, the Spiders went on a 6-0 run of their own courtesy of Doogan and Rachel Ullstrom to cut the Drake lead to 19-18. The Bulldogs were then able to get a free throw off before an 11-0 run from the Spiders gave Richmond its first lead of the game, 29-20. A pair of treys from Siobhan Ryan and Ullstrom pushed the lead to 13, 37-24, and a final three pointer from Katie Hill sent the Spiders into the locker room up 42-26.
Out of the break, the Bulldog offense shined as the team went on a 13-0 run to cut the Spider lead to 45-39 before Doogan ended the scoring drought with a triple. Drake cut the deficit down to four, 50-46, with 1:55 left in the third quarter before Budnik posted five points as time expired to give Richmond a 55-46 lead heading into the final 10 minutes.
Both teams exchanged points to begin the fourth quarter. With 7:09 left in the game, Townsend recorded another mid-range jumper to preserve the Spider lead at eight, 60-52. Following a pair of free throws from Drake, the Spiders went on a 9-0 run to push their lead to 11, 69-58. As the Bulldogs looked to get points off fouls, the Spiders went 5 of 7 from the charity stripe in the final 30 seconds to secure the win, 74-66.
