Spiders Outlast Mountaineers in Overtime Sunday Afternoon

RICHMOND, Va. – Behind 28 points from Maggie Doogan and seven lead changes, the University of Richmond Women's Basketball team completed the comeback victory in overtime Sunday afternoon at home, 80-77, over Appalachian State. With the win, the Spiders pushed their home win streak to 11 (dating back to 2022-23), remain undefeated inside the Robins Center in 2023-24 (4-0) and improved to 8-2 overall while the Mountaineers fell to 5-3.

How it Happened
Both teams got off to a slow start as App State got on the board first two minutes in the game with a pair of free throws. After Siobhan Ryan brought the Spiders within one, 2-1 from a free throw of her own, the Spiders had a brief 4-0 run to go up 4-5, but the Mountaineers responded with a trey to regain the lead, 7-5 with 5:10 left in the quarter. After Grace Townsend posted a layup to bring the score to 13-11 in favor of the opposition, App State jumped to 16-11 off a layup before Addie Budnik sank a trey to bring Richmond within two, 16-14. App State would get one more shot off from deep to end the first quarter up 19-14.
In the second quarter, the Mountaineers again sank a trey to open the quarter before Katie Hill responded with a trey of her own for a 22-17 App State lead. Hill and Doogan combined for another four points to bring the Spiders within one, 22-21. After exchanging a few points, the Mountaineers went on a 5-0 run to jump to 30-23. Doogan recorded back-to-back points for a 35-28 Mountaineer lead and Townsend would get another layup off for a 35-30 score line. At the buzzer, App State would sink a deep trey to send the Spiders into the locker room trailing 38-30.
Out of the break, Doogan quickly posted a layup, but the opposition immediately responded on the other side of the court with one of their own. After App state pushed its lead to 10, 44-43, the Spiders were able to slowly chip away at the lead courtesy of efforts by Townsend, Katie Hill and Ullstrom. Doogan sparked an 8-0 run for the Spiders to cut the deficit to 52-49, but the Mountaineers would respond with a jumper to rebuild the lead, 54-49. Townsend got one final layup off as time expired to head into the fourth quarter down three, 54-51.
A hoop-and-harm from Doogan would tie the game at 54 for the Spiders to open the final 10 minutes. Ullstrom then posted four points to lift the Spiders to a 58-54 lead. Later, two buckets from Doogan would give the Spiders a 64-58 advantage with 4:35 left on the clock, but App State would tie the game again at 65 to force the game into overtime.
In overtime, Doogan netted another hoop-and-harm to give Richmond a 68-65 lead. After Ullstrom got a pair of free throws off, App State came back within one, 70-69, before Doogan pulled up beyond the arc to push the lead to 73-69 with 3:06 left in overtime. Richmond would go on to record seven free throws over two minutes to take the game 80-77.

The sophomore went 12 of 20 from the field, 2 of 5 from deep and 2 of 4 from the charity stripe. In addition, she posted four rebounds, three assists and a block.

- As a team, the Spiders shot 29 of 60 (48.3%) from the field, 4 of 17 (23.5%) from deep and 18 of 23 (78.3%) from the free throw line. In addition, the team also posted 36 rebounds, 18 assists, seven blocks, six thefts and 18 points off 14 Mountaineer turnovers.
