RICHMOND, Va. – Head Coach Houston Barrick and the University of Richmond Men's Tennis team announced on Tuesday the 2024 spring schedule, highlighted by 11 home matches at the Westhampton Tennis Complex and a 2023 Atlantic 10 Championship semifinal rematch at Dayton on Mar. 11.
"I'm very excited for this spring season and this group of guys," Barrick said. "My goal for the schedule this year was to really challenge our athletes and get as much experience as we can leading up to the A-10 Championship. With so many young guys, I am eager to get everyone (and the team) opportunities to continue to develop and grow throughout this spring.
The Spiders open the 2024 season with a trio of matches in West Point, N.Y. as the team takes on Rider and Army on Jan. 26 and Sacred Heart on Jan. 27. Richmond will then open the conference slate at defending A-10 champion VCU on Feb. 7.
Following the match against the Rams, the Spiders will travel to Dayton on Feb. 10 to take on Marquette in a neutral court match, and then the Flyers on Feb. 11 for the second A-10 matchup of the year. Last season, the Flyers ended the season for the Spiders in the A-10 Championship semifinal, 4-3.
"It's always a great challenge to play any A-10 team on the road, but especially Dayton," Barrick said. "They are always a well-coached and tough team, but I am excited for our guys to step into that environment. The match will really challenge us a team and will prepare us to come together in big moments."
Richmond will travel north to Arlington, Va. to take on JMU on Feb. 16 at the Belle Haven Country Club before playing host to Chowan on Feb. 23 for the 2024 home opener at the Westhampton Tennis Complex. Richmond opens March with a trip to Davidson on Mar. 2, and will stay on the Wildcats' home turf to play Duquesne on Mar. 3.
On Mar. 8, Drexel will make the trip to Richmond for a Friday matchup before the team travels to Liberty on Mar. 9. The next day, the Spiders will play host to Navy for a doubleheader and will welcome Hofstra to campus on Mar. 21. UR will then round out March with a match against UT Arlington on Mar. 23 on UNCW's campus before taking on the host team on Mar. 24.
April features six home matches for the Spiders as the team will welcome Longwood on April 3, Georgetown on April 5, Saint Joseph's on April 7, William & Mary on April 10, George Mason on April 12 and finally Fordham on April 14 to round out the regular season. The A-10 Championship is slated for April 25-28 at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Fla.
Barrick welcomes back four returners to the team, seniors Daniel Kliebhan and Sebastian Miano as well as sophomores Davis Wiley and Mark Taranov.
"Sebastian and Daniel are both amazing leaders and representatives of the university," Barrick said. "They have very different leadership styles, but the common theme is their passion for our team, our program and the University of Richmond. With us being such a young team, those guys have really had to step up on and off the court. I'm so proud of all they have done and will continue to do in the future!"
In addition, Barrick also has five freshmen on the roster, Dylan Atkinson, Cole Brashear, Grant Cohen, Paxton Pritchard and Nick Roddy.
"Looking back, I thought we had a great fall overall, and I felt like the young guys stepped up right away," Barrick said. "I'm sure they will have some bumps throughout the spring, but they are excited ready to represent Richmond."
Last season, the Spiders finished 14-9 overall, 5-1 at home and 3-2 in conference play. Richmond was picked as the No. 2 seed in the A-10 tournament and defeated No. 10 seeded Fordham, 4-0 in the opening match before ending the season against Dayton. Kliebhan was named to the Atlantic 10 All-Conference First Team, while former spiders John Walsh and William Karpinski were named to the Second Team.
