Spiders Tame the Wildcats on Super Bowl Sunday

RICHMOND, Va. – Behind 17 points from freshman Maggie Doogan and 21 points in the first quarter, the University of Richmond Women's Basketball team posted a key 75-44 victory over Davidson Sunday afternoon inside the Robins Center. With the win, the Spiders improved to 15-8 overall and an even 5-5 in the Atlantic 10 while the Wildcats fell to 12-12 on the year and 5-5 in conference play.
"That was probably our most complete game of the season," said Head Coach Aaron Roussell. "We've had some games that we played well in and lost, but I thought this game was solid on both ends of the court. Our defense was fantastic, our energy was high and we made things difficult for Davidson to get into its offense."
Doogan, with her seventh-straight game in double figures, shot 7 of 13 from the field, 3 of 7 from deep and recorded a team-high five rebounds, two assists and a theft. Junior Grace Townsend recorded 12 points in the game along with four dimes and four rebounds while junior Addie Budnik chipped in 10 points in the contest and sophomore Sydney Boone was the final Spider in double figures with 10 points, two assists and two rebounds.
As a team, the Spiders shot 30 of 63 (47.6%) from the field, 8 of 21 (38.1%) from beyond the arc and 7 of 8 (87.5%) from the line. In addition, the Spiders also posted 37 rebounds, 13 assists, seven steals, a pair of blocks and 28 points off 20 Wildcat turnovers. The Spider offense also took care of the ball as Davidson forced the Spiders into a season-low 10 rebounds.
Budnik got the Spider offense rolling with a second-chance layup. Doogan followed the play with another easy layup to give UR a 4-0 lead to start the game. A pair of treys courtesy of Doogan and freshman Rachel Ullstrom pushed the Spider lead to 10-6 with 2:52 left. UR rounded out the first 10 minutes with another trey from Ullstrom and mid-range buckets from Budnik and Boone to end the first quarter with the Spiders ahead, 21-11.
Through the first 10 minutes, the Spiders were paced by Ullstrom, who posted six points on 2 of 3 from the field in addition to a theft. Townsend led the offense with two dimes and two boards while Budnik also recorded two rebounds.
As a team, the Spiders shot 8 of 16 (50%) from the field, 3 of 6 (50%) from deep and 2 of 3 (66.7%) from the line. In addition, the team recorded four assists, nine rebounds and eight points off seven Wildcat turnovers.
Boone opened up the second quarter with a layup a minute into action to push the Spider lead to 23-10 and sparked a 5-0 run. Later, buckets from Hill, Doogan and Budnik gave UR a 20-point lead, 34-14, with 3:29 left in the half. After the Wildcats scratched back to a 14-point deficit, 36-22, a layup from Boone and a trey from the opposition sent the Spiders into the locker room leading 38-25.
At the half, the Spiders were shooting 16 of 31 (51.6%) from the field, 4 of 9 (44.4%) from deep and remained 2 of 3 (66.7%) at the line. The team recorded four thefts, seven assists, 15 rebounds, including three offensive, and 12 points off 11 Davidson turnovers through the first 20 minutes.
Individually, Doogan led the way with 12 points on 5 of 7 from the field, while she also recorded three rebounds. Townsend dropped three dimes in the half in addition to two rebounds and Ullstrom added two steals.
The Spiders came out of the locker room and posted a 7-0 run following a quick trey from the Wildcats. Boone then gave UR a 19-point lead with 4:30 left in the quarter off a coast-to-coast drive. Following a trey by Davidson, the Spiders ended the quarter with a 4-0 run to go into the final 10 minutes with a 56-34 lead.
Ullstrom continued the scoring campaign in the fourth, as she recorded an open layup to begin the quarter. Later, the Spiders shot lights out and went on a 13-0 run sparked by a bucket from Townsend to build a 33-point lead, 73-40 with 2:10 left on the clock. Following a mid-range bucket from Davidson, graduate Emilija Krista Grava recorded her first minutes back from injury and posted a layup. A pair of free throws from the Wildcats would end the game with the Spiders on top, 75-44.
UP NEXT –With just four regular season games left, the Spiders will be back inside the Robins Center on Feb. 15 at 6 p.m. against Saint Louis and will round out the 2023 road slate at Duquesne on Feb. 18 at 2 p.m. and VCU on Feb. 22 at 6 p.m. Richmond will host alumni night, Pow(HER) On and senior night on Feb. 25 against St. Bonaventure at 6 p.m. to conclude the regular season.
