Spiders Record Double-Digit Victory over Saint Louis Wednesday Evening

RICHMOND, Va. – With five Spiders finishing in double figures, the University of Richmond Women's Basketball team posted a 84-74 victory over Saint Louis Wednesday evening inside the Robins Center. Richmond pushed its win streak to three-straight games while snapping an SLU five-game win streak and improved to 16-8 on the year and 6-5 in Atlantic 10 play, while the Billikens fell to 11-17 on the year and 7-6 in the A-10.
"I thought we did a really good job of shutting Brooke Flowers down," said Head Coach Aaron Roussell. "She and Kyla McMakin got their points off, but we made them work for it. It wasn't easy shutting down the offense and we dodged some bullets, but we made them work for them."
The Spiders were led by freshman Maggie Doogan, who recorded her eighth-straight game in double figures with 19 points on 6 of 11 from the field, 2 of 5 from deep and 5 of 6 from the line. In addition, the freshman recorded seven rebounds, three blocks, two steals and an assist. Junior Grace Townsend recorded 13 points with seven assists, six rebounds and was a perfect 7 of 7 from the line while freshman Rachel Ullstrom recorded 12 points and six rebounds. Sophomore Katie Hill recorded 11 points in the contest and junior Addie Budnik was the final Spider in double figures with 10 points, pushing her career total to 960 points.
As a team, the Spiders shot 28 of 56 (50%) from the field, 11 of 23 (47.8%) from deep and 17 of 21 (81%) from the line. In addition, the team had 28 rebounds, including six offensive, 34 rebounds, 15 assists, eight blocks and nine thefts.
Hill got the scoring campaign started for the Spiders, with a driving layup a minute into the contest. After SLU went up 7-2, the Spiders scratched back with buckets from Townsend and Doogan to tie the game at seven. Later, a pair of free throws gave Richmond its first lead of the game, 10-9, but the Billikens responded and tied the game at 13, and again at 15 with 59 seconds left in the quarter. SLU got a buzzer-beater shot off in the final seconds to end the first quarter leading 18-15.
Junior Siobhan Ryan began the second quarter with a quick trey 45 seconds into the quarter to tie the game at 18. Budnik followed the play with a three pointer on her own to give the Spiders a slight 21-18 advantage. Richmond pushed its lead to four, 27-23 following a deep shot by Hill, but Saint Louis quickly responded and regained the lead, 30-27, with back-to-back jumpers. After staying neck-and-neck throughout the quarter, SLU gained a small 40-35 lead, but Hill recorded an open layup to send the Spiders into the locker room trailing 40-37.
In the first half, the Spiders shot 13 of 26 (50%) from the field, 8 of 12 (66.7%) from deep and a perfect 3 of 3 from the free throw line. Richmond recorded 16 rebounds, eight assists, three steals and recorded five points off seven Billiken turnovers. Individually, Hill paced the team, recording seven points on 3 of 7 from the field and 1 of 2 from deep. Budnik recorded six points in the first 20 minutes while she also led the team with four rebounds and Townsend recorded six assists.
Out of the locker room, Ryan recorded a quick trey to tie the game at 40. Doogan later followed the play with a layup off a Billiken turnover to build the Spider lead to 46-41 with 6:59 left in the game. After SLU scratched back to a 48-47 deficit, the Spiders went on a 5-0 run to build a 53-47 lead with 3:01 left in the quarter. One last layup from the Billikens would end the third quarter with Richmond ahead, 53-49.
In the fourth quarter, the Spiders got off to a 7-2 start courtesy of Townsend for a 60-51 lead. The Billikens scratched back to a 64-59 deficit with 5:30 left on the clock but Ullstrom ended the scoring drought with back-to-back layups for a 68-59 lead. Doogan then recorded another trey with 4:19 left to build a 10 point lead, 71-61. In foul trouble, the Spiders were able to build a 12 point lead and a final layup from SLU gave Richmond the win, 84-74.
UP NEXT – The Spiders will look ahead at their two final regular-season road games, taking on Duquesne at 2 p.m. on Feb. 18 and will round out the road slate on Feb. 22 at 6 p.m. against VCU.
